I've seen some fellas that just couldn't wait.... One time on another forum a guy posted pictures of this plywood platform he'd built to spread his weight out, he was fishing on an inch and a half of ice.

personally I've fished on 3", but it was a lake I knew well and I stayed in 2 feet of water.
