cushion / mattress ideas
« on: Sep 23, 2017, 08:29 PM »
Hey Guys... 90F in Northern Wisconsin in late September... hope that changes soon.

Built a 6x8 wheeled shack last year and I'm doing a few more things on it for the upcoming season... one of my goals is to stay on the ice over night a few times this winter (like my wood heat over propane for this purpose). I plan to build a bench seat that converts to a bed.  Essentially there will 2 "panels" each about 6' x 18" wide.  In "bench" mode, one of the panels will be the back rest and the other the seat.  Obviously in bed mode they'll both lay flat next to each other for a 6' x 36" wide bed.

Anyone have any ideas where to get how to make cushions that would fit each panel?  I am shocked how much upholstery shops get for custom cushions (probably $150 to $200 /cushion for these would be my guess).  Beside "egg crate" foam from hospitals does anyone have any good ideas?  I'd be looking for something 3" + thick with medium to firm density (I'm a pretty big guy).

Thanks.

check the craft stores for foam. it is offered in different density and sizes. check coach covers for the bench section and cut the foam and slip a couch cover over it.

I would go to Walmart and look at the cushions for the chaise lounge chairs if they haven't put them away yet.

That or a babby crib matress ??

If you play with the dimensions you may be able to fit 2 or 3 crib mattresses  I think they are 27.5 x 52?? Or about 2 x4 foot aprox 24 x 48 depending how you place them.. some crib mattress are like $40 each for a 7 inch thick mattress  two would come out to around $80 and those are more readily available then custom cushions ..

A few layers of carpet underlay with a cheap low density foam on top will make an adequate mattress.

I use a mattress from fish house supply.com. Comfy at $110.

Depending on what you need and want, check on Amazon and you can get a roll of foam for pads/cushions delivered to your door. I ordered one last year to make some seat cushions.

Personally, I'm thinking about getting a 4in gel/foam mattress topper to make a cushion to sleep on.

I went to a store that sold foam when I made a conversion van. I bought 4 inch heavy foam and they cut it to size. the wife at the time did a lot of sewing and made covers for the cushions out of denim. When I bought an old tent camper I bought a big piece of foam from them to replace the crappy mattress. She covered that with denim as well.

I still have all of them. One of the van cushions is used on the bench seat in one of my deer blinds.

If you got a air driven crown stapler like I do you could get some foam like at link below and some automotive grade vinyl like they sell at Joans fabric sold buy the yard..  I stapled mine to a 3/4 sheet of mdf pull tight it should come out good..  I used 3/4 length crown staples do they dont pass threw the board also have used auto motive grade carpet to do the same...  wrap it like a speaker box for a car.. any how see link..

Thanks for the ideas guys... definitely some options.  Once I get the structure built and figure out a mattress direction I'll give an update.

On my bench seat that i had in my permanent house. I used two layers of thick carpet padding and then a one layer of Frieze carpet. It was very comfortable. Many remarked about it and then did the same in their house.
