Title: ice buildup on line
Post by: idtrout on Jan 23, 2022, 08:58 PM
When Jigging for perch I'm usually sitting outside and not in a ice shelter. After jigging awhile i get ice forming on my line from from putting line down in water and taking it out. When ice forms it becomes difficult to reel in and strip line off . So my question is there anything i can do to keep ice from building up on my line, or are some line better than others. I use Berkeley micro ice as my mainline.

When conditions are right ice is going to freeze on your line. Lots of "ice free" gimmicks out there but never used or heard of anything that is 100% or lasts very long term. Just part of ice fishing.

Bigger eyes and longer rods..mono better than most other lines .. Bigger eyes longer ice build easier to remove ..longer rods allow to to closer to the ice hole less ice to remove overall also good for keeping line from blowing around

Yep, reach down and grab the line at the tip and strip the ice off of it, every now and then.  It's been done millions upon millions of times and it the only tried and true way to keep ice off of a line, if you're sitting outside.  Sorry, just had to do it!
Yep or invent heated line ;)
Tried lip balm and fly line treatment for ice, none worked liked I thought

Grip it, rip it, and strip it. Works every time.

ive seen guys say that theyll put smelt oil or something similar along the last couple guides as a way to keep the ice from forming. I havent done it personally though, im a rip off with my hand individual myself. The larger guides will definitely help though. Youll still have to clean the line but you can do it a little less frequently
