"Technically" overnight parking in the MDB lot is not allowed, at least during the rest of the year.
Hi all,
I have the opportunity to do quite a bit of fishing this winter. I've never ice fished LG before and live about an hour and fifteen minutes away. Here's my idea for your consideration.
I want to put up a 16x8 ish shanty with small wood stove and leave it for 5-6weeks somewhere I can leave a vehicle parked from Sat - Monday or Tuesday night. So fairly accessible and on decent perch water would the ideal spot. This would more or less just serve as a camp and starting point, I want to spend most of the time learning to laker fish.I was thinking off MDB maybe? I was also wondering about just setting up on diamond island? Although I'm not sure how ice holds up out there. I'd like to be set up in 2 weeks. Give me idea's or tell me why I'm stupid!!!

also, if you did decide to do it, I would recommend leaving a sign in your window saying where you are and what you are doing to prevent someone erroneously sending out a search party looking for you when they see your car parked after dark.

I did it a few years back and was out there for 2 straight days. It was fun! Chasing eyes and crappie at night and perch during the daylight hours. I plan on doing a few more this year. But you're right, you definitely have to be prepared.

I use to do that, when I was young and not as smart as I am now...lol.  It was fun but not anymore. Having "fun" is one of the first things to go as you grow older...h2l

I saw you've talked about it in the past couple of years, but we never had that great of ice to do so. I hope you guys get into some good smelt and crappie. I'm sure you will!

Mr back country horse guide says it sounds Terrible? LOL come on Tim!!   I bet with a woodstove it woudn't be that bad...speaking of which, you bring any of those outfitters tents and woodstoves back from Colorado with you?

In all seriousness, I have camped out overnight on the ice a few times.   Most important thing is a comfortable place to lie down...and lots of bacon.

Can't forget about those...  when you get one though, it's usually a good one!  :)

I still can't believe that they haven't taken them out yet!

Take note boys...JonNY sends me this picture and asked to post so everyone stays dry if and when those holes get covered with snow.  The powers that be knew the lake was going to freeze.  Just another attempt to inhibit ice fishing...

Great thanks for sharing.  I was wondering about that yesterday when I walked by those docks?  I was thinking to myself those are pretty nice and probably cost a good bit of taxpayer money and might not hold up too well to several tons of pressure as the ice does it's thing.

Looks like they did a good job getting them out without really breaking up the ice those small holes will close up and be fine in a couple days I would guess.

You let me know when you are ready and I am in.  I have a buddy that is in too.  Ive learned a night in the mid 20's allows for some good sleeping!

Fold up cot, buddy heater, shack, and a 20lb propane. Isn't much different than any other camping really.
Only thing missing is a woman. I ain't cut out for that kind of stuff...  ;D

That's just crazy -20 to -30 would make it a long night I don't like sleeping in my shanty with the heater going. I have camped on the ice with temps down to 5° with no heater and that is about at cold as I want to sleep in. Like John said nights in the 20's perfect for ice camping

Im going to be there anyways.  If you have stones that big id do it.  I did -6 with 8-10 winds all night.  I used my heater and 2 carbon monoxide detectors.

The incentive is doing something challenging and being front and center as soon as the sun comes up.  You have to want to do it and there are some skills needed to prevent hypothermia.

My stuff is ready Logan.

Shanty, Cot, Heater, and a fan to circulate air.  Good sleeping bag and it is doable.....Can't say I wouldn't wait until next week when it's going to be in the 20's though :)

I’m out at vets park right now and it is absolutely terrible.  I haven’t marked one fish.  5 to 6 inches of ice in the bay. I guess it’s better than working today
