Maybe so. We'll see how November goes. Would be fun though. Even a blind squirrel could catch fish at Henry's Lake during first ice.

Until then:

I hope the ice fishing season is better than the open water season has been . This is the worst season I have ever seen .

That's too bad Curt. I'm certain you'll be out on the ice enough to figure em out again this winter.  :)

Curt I seen the post about the water temperature, Do ya think with all the seismic activity some warm water is finding its way in there ? I sure hope it better planning on making the trip soon as there is safe ice  ;D
Title: Re: Henry's Lake
Post by: curt69 on Sep 30, 2014, 06:34 PM
Water temperature is not the problem . This has been the coldest year on record . In August we received 5.2 inches of water , and the high temperature was 64 degrees . The water temperature on August 28 was 58 degrees and the lake is 95  percent and raising . I will be on the ice everyday the wind is below 15 mph . Last year the wind was very bad .

From Goose Bay back to the dam will have safe ice 1 week before the main lake . It always does . I will post when there is safe ice and where . This will make some people mad because they like to have early ice to themselves .

Earliest I've personally been on it is the day after Thanksgiving, but I know others are often on it earlier.  I'd check out Goose Bay for first ice.

After looking back at my pics from last year, it was the day after Thanksgiving, Nov 22. Even though I'm not a big trout fan, the fishing was nonstop all day long. Great place to knock the rust off.

Hooknhunter,
From what i have read turn over happens quickly, on large reserviors 2-3 days on small lakes overnight. During turnover the bite is off until the fish get used to the changes...It has probably already happened given curt69 post "Fished 4 hours yesterday . 2.5 hours trolling 1.5 bait fishing . Caught 2 small fish . The fish finder was going crazy , but I couldn't get them to bite"

Did ya look at the picture from yesterday?  The lake HAS turned over, and ice is forming.  No need to wait for it to turn.

The question wasn't about Henry's lake specifically, but just lakes in general.  Obviously, Henry's has turned or it wouldn't be forming ice now.  I guess I wasn't clear in my original question.

The one photo is a web cam at last chance, its the Henry's fork. the other is the dot cam at the entrance to Henry's lake at the state ramp. Im sure ice is there we have several ponds here in burley that capped last night. If the wind will quit ice should build fast, I would bet someone will be on it this weekend if not sooner

There is no timetable or chart.  It depends on many factors.  Depth, clarity, wind, whether there is water flowing in or out, etc... etc.

This is a really good question, last year at Ririe the reservoir never did really freeze.  It did for a short few days then it warmed up again and the wind blew it all off.  Ririe is a really deep reservoir though, but we had some darn cold early temps and it seemed like Ririe just never would turn all the way over.  We'll see how it goes this year.

Fished at Goose Bay for about an hour then couldn't take the wind.  It was 3 degrees with a 25 mph wind.  It was absolutely miserable.  5 inches of pretty good ice and with the temps I'm sure it will thicken.  The entire lake is capped.  There were people fishing at the County dock, didn't look like anyone had tried Staley's, stump hole, or Wild Rose.  That end of the lake has dark clear, slick looking ice, not sure of the thickness but I'm betting not much.  Someone had tried to go out at the Hatchery, but I couldn't tell by the tracks if they were able to fish or not.  State Boat dock had lots of holes, but few brave souls fishing when we drove in, the wind there was even worse.  The road into Goose Bay was drifting but not too bad, 4x4 ok.  Going to try again Tuesday but I will be looking at the State web cam and if the wind is blowing 20 or more I'm not going to bother.  I will also add that the water was extremely murky and most of the fish I marked were all in the top 5 feet of water....weird for sure.

My son and I hit Henry's yesterday. Fished at Hatchery from 9:30 til 3:00. Iced 22 fish, my boy landed the biggest at just over 22" and weighed in at 5lbs 4oz.  His biggest fish so far...and through the ice. THe weather was great, mostly sunny with only a light breeze.

Stopped at IP dam boat launch on the way out. Lake is capped shore to shore. Didn't look like anyone had dared venture out, nor did I.

Good luck out there  @)

I will be hitting it Friday afternoon. Waiting for my buddies to be there Saturday. Eskimo 949 if anyone wants to swap fish stories or just say hi. Not sure where to start, but doing my homework now. Does anyone have a favorite lure or color that they would be willing to share? Also, wanting to try out my Jaw jacker and curious how many lines are allowed at one time? Thanks in advance! :icefish:

5 lines with up to 5 hooks per line . I was fishing Goose Bay not 1 bite in 4 hours . Drove around the lake and there were 3 groups at county boat dock . 1 at stayles, 1 at Pintail Point . No one at Wild Rose or  the Hatchery , or State Park . The lake froze so fast during a wind storm that several waterfowl were froze into the lake . The crows are feasting on the carcasses at the state park . Never seen that before .

11/19 Fished again at Hatchery Creek area, more between Wild Rose and hatchery though today.  Ice was the same as yesterday, right at 5 inches.  Slow at first light, which is usually the golden hour, but then it really picked up until it absolutely died at 11.  Iced over 30, and lost at least 15.  Size was impressively good again today, with some very small fish also mixed in, but overall good.  36 degrees when we left, but doubt the temps will affect the ice any.  Also, as a bonus, got to meet and talk with Damon, the new fishery manager.  He checked our licenses and also came back out two different times to see how we were doing.  He said he would be checking as many fisherman as he is able.  Got an excellent education about the hybrid species that is stocked and his feelings about the overall health of the lake.  He was excited to see people out ice fishing and overall is a really genuine person to talk with; you can tell he cares a great deal not only about the health of the fishery but also the fisherman's experience.

Thanks for the report . Do you think it would be safe to ride a 4 wheeler on the ice .

Damon had his out on the ice around the hatchery towing out some buoys to mark off the closed area because the wind had blown the other ones around a lot.  Personally I think it's a little thin, but that's just me.  I certainly would be extremely careful if you did take one out, and make sure you bring tow ropes to haul it out of a slush spot when it does go through!

I hope so!  I have never landed a monster yet, in fact the biggest game fish I have ever caught was a 22 inch lake trout.  I hope we all come away with some good pics and good times this weekend.

Might take us 10hrs to drive there with the weather outlook, but won't be my first, or last drive in the snow.

See you Saturday!

I'm headed up Saturday Morning. I have never fished Staley Springs before but would like to give it a try. Any reports on what the ice looks like up that way? Also where is the best place to park your vehicle when you fish it? If its too thin we will probably hit it at the State docks or the Wild Rose. I heard that there was quite a bit of slush under the ice at the state docks, is that true for the whole lake right now?
Title: Re: Henry's Lake
Post by: Groundtrac on Nov 20, 2014, 08:59 PM
When I drove by this afternoon at Staley's, there was a large group fishing there with a four wheeler on the ice.  I assume it's at least 5 or so inches just like everywhere else.  You can either park off the road just to the east of Staley's in the pullout area and walk along the brush area down into there, or park at the point down the 4x4 road half way between Staley's and the county dock and walk over to Staley's.  IMHO, everyone likes to tell people about the big-ones they catch at Staley's but that area really sees a lot of pressure and there are lots and lots of other places to fish.

The slush that people are talking about is coming from overflow areas on the pressure cracks.  The wind really bunched that early ice up and there are pressure ridges everywhere.  One heaved and opened right near us as we were fishing the hatchery area.  Nothing to be too concerned about, just be aware that there are some slushy areas right now until it freezes hard again.  It was 37 degrees when we left today.

Is was really good again as long as you can stay off the weeds.  I do plan on fishing other areas but the hatchery has really kept me interested plus Damon has been around there and out talking to people and I always like to hear what he has to say I drove down into goose bay on the way out to see if you or anyone else was there but no one was down in there.

Thank you!  Looks like we are going to need it.  Only expecting 25-40mph winds with 10-14 inches of snow, it will be an experience for sure!  If we don't post on Shanty by Monday, somebody come find us!  LOL

Fished Henrys Sat. morning. We drove through bad weather but the lake was beautiful and no wind in the morning. Three of us iced 15-20 each from 7:30-10:30 am. We were fishing white paddle bugs on the jigging rods and small ice flies with meal worms on jawjackers. Biggest fish was 5 1/2 lb hybrid that Damon weighed.  Most fish were 16-18 inch Cutts.

Made it up and back!  Fished Sat and Sun, and everybody (6 people) caught fish at a decent rate.  Good times, would definitely take the drive and fish up there again.

Fished yesterday. Ice was a good 7 inches. But it was a slush monster due to the 18" of new snow the day before.

Post by: trout_hunter on Nov 27, 2014, 03:18 PM
Fished at the state park this AM. Iced 15 or so. All standard henrys cutties but one nice female brook. Ice was solid 8-10 but the sluch layer on top sucked as it was constantly filling the holes up. Water clarity was as bad as I have ever seen it. Slush around the holes was turning brown the water was that dirty. As always for us a black marabou jig caught the most fish, 2nd was a glow in the dark shrimp jig with half a meal worm on a jaw jacket. The bite was pretty light. Head towards the north end tomorrow or sat to see if the clarity improves.

The wind was blowing 35 mph the day the lake froze . The moss was dieing and floating in the lake It was blowing out of the north . I believe between the moss be pushed to the south shore and all the mud stirred up by the waves crashing on that end of the lake , that is what is going on . I fished Goose Bay 10 days ago and you could only see your bait 6" under the water . I was hoping it would clear up by now .

I'm heading over there in a little over a week.  I very exited to be making this annual trip.  We'll be staying at the Wild Rose.  I plan on access the ice at the WR, but I could move around if necessary.  How's the ice holding up?  Is an ATV useful at this point?  Is there any hope for an ATV being useful in 7-10 days?  My ATV is a Suzuki Eiger 400 4x4.  I have decent to good tires, but no chains or tracks.

It's fine for an atv as of today. Ice at the county dock was 10". Very slow fishing however today. The Hatchery are was where the big mess was last weekend with guys going through the ice in the overflow areas. But there were some cold nights and it seems to have froze up again nicely.

Plans have changed and we are now heading out on Tuesday evening and should be there around mid day on Wednesday.  I'm getting really anxious and excited to go.  I really appreciate all the reports.  Thanks to all.  It appears the ice is holding up okay and that is great news.  I expect to be fishing from Wednesday through Saturday and I'd be happy to share reports while I'm there, but I don't know if I'll have Wi-Fi in our accommodations.  I guess I should check on that.

Hope to see you out there.  Feel free to give me a call or look for me in front of the WR.

I am headed up in the morning. With the temps today and the forecast for higher temps tomorrow I am seriously second guessing taking the ranger up. Was anyone there today fishing that can provide some ice conditions?  I saw one post elsewhere that said ice at the hatchery was 6 to 8 inches. If that's the case then the ice in that area has lost some thickness. A week ago it was over 10 inches there.

I was there yesterday by the hatchery ice was a solid 10 to11 inches of clear ice with 3 inches of frozen slush and snow fishing was slow but steady I'm thinking the same thing about a 4wheeler with the warm weather I'll take a snow machine to. How long are you there I'm coming over Friday

Fished Pintail today, was extremely slow, not sure why, but I must not have had my fishing juju turned on.  BTW, last week there was some guys in a razor causing all kinds of hell from Pintail all the way to the county dock.  I for one was perturbed.  Today I learned I wasn't the only one, I guess they had made a mess of the bank at Pintail where they parked, trying to catch air from the lake up the bank to the parking area or something stupid like that.  Damon informed me that little parking area is actually private property and the landowner has let F&G maintain it as an access point as long as it isn't abused.  Damon said he was able to get a partial plate from who did the damage and is trying to track them down.  I wish people would just use their heads sometimes....

Good news and bad news , they don't need a license until they are 14 . The bad news is there limit counts in yours . The limit is 2 . If you don't keep fish you are good to go . If the store you are talking about don't sell licenses I know Robins Roost does .

Yes Idaho license's can be purchased online, I prefer it sometimes as I dont always like stopping on my way out. I have had more than one occasion where the store worker was having a hard time getting the machine to work. Took 6 of us 2 hrs to get our licence's in bancroft one time.  Here's a link to the page on Idaho's fish and game site

https://id.outdoorcentral.us/ (https://id.outdoorcentral.us/)

As stated thanks for all the good reports everyone and that just sucks that people cant respect the fishery and private property that allows us access. It only takes one to ruin it for everyone  >:(

I've had that happen once, well, actually twice, the first and last time, ever.

After about 45 minutes, I asked if my old license would help.    They "scaned" the code on an old license, just like magic, the printer began.    Was out of there within 4 minutes.    Just before I left, I was graciously thanked for bringing in the old license.

I don't know if there is a bad place, but I like to look for an area with fewer weeds.  It may take drilling a few holes to find that, or you may get lucky and nail it the first try.  Popular places with relatively easy access are the State Park, County Boat ramp, Pintail Point, the Hatchery, and in front of the Wild Rose.  Staley springs is also very popular, but you'd need to walk there from either the county boat ramp or pintail point.  If I was going to walk there I'd go from the county boat dock.

Once you get there, look for the other people, or look for obvious places others have fished.

I tried several types of jigs, spoons, and baits.  I'd say smaller jigs (white or pink) tipped with meal worm, paddle bugs in pink or white did pretty good.  One afternoon a guy came down and did as good as anyone and better than most on Berkeley crappie jigs (bubble gum).  I caught most of my fish jigging a Thomas Bouyant in rainbow trout color.  I caught my biggest fish on a Firetiger Jiggin Rap.  Seems everything works and nothing works really well.

We fished around the State dock today, went way out along the east shore.  Fishing started off hot then died completely.  We moved to another spot, only marked a couple of fish and only had a couple of bites.  Moved again closer to the dock area where the masses were and hardly marked any, but managed to land a small brookie and one real nice 3.5 lb Cutt.  While I was cleaning him just now, in his gut was a 4.5" sculpin, hardly digested.  My question is, why can't I ever catch anything on big bait?  This one hit on the smallest jig I was using.  I have tried fishing with crawdad and sculpin size lures before and have never caught anything on them up there?  Any ideas?  BTW, I put the sculpin in the freezer and plan to use him next time out.  :)

I'm not sure what you are using or how you are fishing it, but I catch fish on what I'd call 'big baits' all the time.  In fact, when I'm dead sticking that seems to be the best bait for me is a big one.

i hit up Henry's for a regrettably short day last tuesday (Dec. 16th) caught one nice 16 1/2" cutthroat right off the bat, then had nothing but nibbles the rest of the day. managed to hook another one on a dead rod just before we left, but it broke the line at the hole.

i got hit more jigging with a tiny rattle trap than anything else, just couldn't get any of them to stick, and once they touched it they were gone for good. we were using white and glow jigs with bits of nightcrawler on the dead rods.

Is anyone headed up to give it a try tomorrow?  With this wonderful snow we are getting?

Curt I tried to PM you last night but it wasn't working. We were able to get into state park with 4 wheel drive. The parking lot is a different story though. There is a giant drift in the middle of it. But you should be able to get around it with a quad. After that it's fine. Fishing was slow. Again very light bites

Headed up Wednesday, figuring on the wild rose, how safe is the ice there? I know last year I fished there once and it was a little sketchy.

ICe was great last sat and with the sub zero temps tonight I'm guessing it will be well over a foot thick.
