how close is close enough
« on: Dec 16, 2018, 10:47 PM »
Was at harpers this am, fishing was steady UNTIL.
A group of 5 guys about 50 yards off was fishing and not catching any thing,
Here they came.
My holes were about 15 feet apart and they drilled between my holes and circled around me.
I would catch a fish and 2-3 of their lines also.
The last fish I caught was  about 6# and I  waited until I had 5 of their lines tangled and I cut my line and I left.
Hope they had fun with the mess.

It always blows my mind, there's a whole lake out there, find your own spot... Although I'm the guy who purposely sets out to fish away from the crowds, fishing is usually better anyway.

sorry to hear you had that experience. I always make a point to not fish by someone else, even if they are in the spot I wanted to go. That is really frustrating. I go fishing to get away from people, not to get tangled with them.
It doesn't sound that appealing to most people I talk to, but going out onto a frozen lake and staring into a hole for the day is my favorite thing to do.

People are amazing. I think the way you handled it was awesome! As I get older I find that my filter is almost nonexistent, so I probably would have said something, but when it's 5:1 that might not be the best plan. Congratulations on your ability to bite your tongue.

That brings back the nightmares of fishing at the trout parks in southern Missouri.  The second someone sees you hauling in a fish, they would race to the run I was fishing and it would be elbow to elbow combat fishing.

I went out to Georgetown Lake this weekend.  For the most part everyone kept pretty good distance between each other and they didn't stay long anyway.  By noon I had the place to myself.

Why did they bother drilling any holes when they could have simply reeled up your gear and used yours? ;D

They deserved a polite word followed by a not so polite word...

If I want to fish within 75 feet of others I usually walk over and ask if they mind. I have drilled holes for others and let them sit on my buckets if they don't have any. There are some that can't afford the equipment. I can also remember a guy who walked up and used holes I hadn't fished yet and acted like I owed him something. When I walked out of the area my sled accidentally ran over one of his ice rods and broke the handle of his reel. I guess we did have a few words.  ;)
It seems to go from zero to hero all some have to do is lie.

I'm going to throw out there a quick warning based on experience from just last year: Try to be polite at least at first. You never know when that guy getting too close is an undercover CO.

Only time I’ve ever seen one was during the CF perch derby. He didn’t even check our licenses. Just asked us how the fishing was and kept cruising. Guess we didn’t look like poachers

You need to get a real retarded ice dog who likes to just go up to people around you, lick them and get tangle in their lines.  A mastiff or rottweiler are good choices with a 100 foot leash.  Make sure to take something the dog likes to retrieve when you throw it.  And throw in that direction.
wish you many hook-ups

We had it happen Friday, guys came right at us. They were talking about how they could find the old holes from yesterday like that was enough for them to set-up on top of us.

I really think guys like this are not on forums and do not read about this stuff. Or they just do not care at all.

I stopped duck hunting when some guys set-up behind me and we got pelted with BB's and I had my son with me who was younger back then.

I like Ice fishing because normally this does not happen, or you can pick up and move.

Are you on drugs??  If someone started punching holes next to me without so much as a friendly word first there would be some issues.  I don't mind sharing a spot or even gear but if you move in on top of me without asking that's a different story.

a few years ago, I was hole hopping and a guy who was fishing about 40 yards from me came over and started to fish one of my holes. I was like 2 holes away when he did this. he was back fishing his own holes and I went over there and drilled a hole 10 feet from where he was sitting and started fishing. Ended up catching 2 perch! he wasn't catching anything. he was keeping his fish. I purposely put them back down the hole

As do I on Tiber and Fresno and others.

Good advise although being rude is not against the law which is why we are having this discussion in the first place.

Last year at G-town. Snow and slush sucked so I packed down a spot to fish. The far hole in the packed down area is mine. The closer hole was drilled by a woman that just walked right up to me and drilled that hole as well as 20 more all around me 🤡🔫
