Ion Battery Coozy
« on: Feb 08, 2013, 10:01 AM »
This is what I came up with to combat having to take my battery off to keep it warm on my Ion.
Wifey made it in about an hour.

Reflectix lined with a waterproof/windproof nylon shell (tent material). Used black as it will draw heat naturally from the sun as well.

One Hand warmer here for the front of the battery.

One had warmer on left and right side

Buttoned up

Front shot

On the Ion

I havnt tested it yet, but my hope is this will keep it warm enough to leave it on the auger in the coldest of conditions.
Without having to remove it to keep it warm.. May not need 3 hand warmers either, but testing will tell.

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Pretty nice man. From what I have read that the only real con to the ION augers is that keeping the battery warm to keep its charge. Seems like you just came up with a perfect way to keep that from being and issue anymore. Nice Work

Nicely done.  How heavy is one of those batteries?  Just from the looks of it, it looks like it'd be a PIT-rear to keep in your coat pocket...

My best guess would be a brick. About the same size/weight.
More than i want in my pocket.

I battle tested my coozy today. Morning temps were in the single digits. And climbed to the mid 30s by the afternoon.

Punched about 12 holes first thing (guy i was with didnt wanna lug his gas auger  ;D  ) at about 7am
Set the Ion down and waited (with my coozy/warmers on).

Roughly 4hrs later i drill about 10 more holes, still had 3 bars of battery, cut like it just came off the charger.

3.5 hrs later when packing up, cut another hole just to make sure, still had 3 bars of juice, cut no problem.

Temps through out the day are as follows. While it warmed up during the day. People have been reporting battery issues in temps in the 20s. And Ion recommends keeping it over 40deg.
8am : 12F
9am : 16F
10am : 23F
11am : 29F
12pm : 31F
1pm : 34F
2pm :  36F
3pm : 37F
4pm : 36F
