Title: Pymatuning
Post by: bfreex89 on Feb 01, 2019, 10:08 AM
Anyone been to Pymatuning yet this year? My old man and I are planning to head up there tomorrow.  Saw the reports saying that Tuttle was a good starting point, but was also thinking of hitting the creek channel off of the Manning launch.

Thanks guys!

Is the tournament all over the lake tomorrow or just off shelter 4? Also where is shelter 4, can’t find on the park map?
Thinking about trying off the Jamestown Beach. Not sure how the ice is out there so any nearby observerstions welcomed.

Jamestown end is pretty easy to fish. Since you can't walk far.  Plenty of places to get on and off and deep water is close to shore.  Some places are less than 100 feet from shore.

Fished yesterday at Jamestown only one out.  Fished there Saturday and ice was a good 12". Yesterday best I could find was 6 1/2". Is is going fast.  Couldn't get close to my old holes ice was really thin.  2 hits with spud bar and it went through.  Had to avoid areas where there was a lot of holes drilled from the weekend.  Places where it was white was soft.  When you walked you could see water movement in the old holes.

Same what I found yesterday, drain hole and ice was shot around old holes...be careful out there

What makes it worse are those people who think they need those large 10" holes, WHY?

Your not catching fish so big that you need holes that big.  With holes that big when we have these mid winter warm ups it just makes a situation where someone could go though.  It is even worse where you have these weekend cities pop up.  Too many holes in a small area and not enough caution by people going out because hey the ice should be ok because we were there last weekend and the ice was good.

If you go now you better take the same precautions that you that took  at first ice or be prepared to do so swimming.

The older I get the more cautious I get.

I can not imagine the ice being good. I was out Tuesday all day and from morning till dark we lost 3". Bringing it down to down to 6" where I was. With the rain and 50 deg I would be surprised there isn't a lot of open water.

I was up on the south end today by the livery. I checked ice by shore and a lot of  places I could punch through with one hit with the spud. I was on it Tuesday  and really wasn't comfortable with what I saw then.  Finally fished off docks today. Ice around them was maybe 4" and most all of that was rotten. Caught a few small gills was it for me today.

North end beyond Manning had 15 or so people out fishing in middle. Water was open from causeway out to just below Manning. South of Causeway had all open water down to Westford area. This was all this past Monday. Could not tell you what went on last three days. Be safe.

I was one of the 15 or so on monday all the way out at the river channel. We were on 7 or 8 inches of ice. Fishing was very good monday. Went back weds and there was nobody out and a cpl people checking ice close to shore. Only 3 inches at several spots that we checked. Either we walked over all of that thin ice to get to the 7 or 8 inches or somehow we lost a good 4 or 5 inches since monday despite the frigid temps. Maybe something to do with the open water not too far away. I didnt check ice on the way to the creek channel monday since i was following the tracks of the previous dozen or so anglers out. We ended up not fishing along with a couple other guys that were checking the ice weds morn.  Pretty disappointing to say the least after having so much fun at the same spot monday.

Posted by shumes on the fishing report page.

Had heard someone went through at manning and had to be rescued. So drove out there and it's open water from shore to channel under the causeway down to within 100 yards of manning. Looked like the rescue was out about 80 yards from shore. Its a no go for me. Drove to linesville launch and snow covered ice out to Harris island walked out by beach area 60 yards and had 5" of ice. Went a little further and it was 4". All done here for me. Not worth a 6" perch. Better days are to come. Stay safe.

Thanks for the report shumes. Much appreciated

Not yet ,but its going fast. Saw some bays open . With this warm air and wind and rain should be a lot more open soon. For today, Just taking a guess , I'd say 70% covered .

The Linesville and Wilson areas and boat launches are still under ice and unaccessable, this end of the lake is still pretty much ice up along the banks.
