Nils Auger Extension

How many inches of ice are typically needed before you need the extension on a Nils hand auger? I thought I remember someone saying around 20...

Never need one, My Nils is 48". They sell a 42" and 48". I am 5' 10" and have no issue with the 48" plus powerhead. You don't have to bend way down to the ice ever. I watch guys running strike masters bottoming out the powerhead instead of putting on ext... Don't miss that.
