tip up lubrication
« on: Sep 24, 2012, 08:42 PM »
May be whuppin a dead horse but.......... This from my fishin buddy Frank. Drill a small hole in the upper end of your tip up shaft; use a chain saw bar tip grease gun to fill shaft with your favorite grease. Keep the water out it won't freeze.

You cannot just use any old grease as it will stiffen up and be hard for the shaft to rotate. ask me how I know.

I do mine the hard way and take them apart. The shafts can also rust so I remove any rust befor eputting them back together. I regrease with thinned white lithium but it gets a little stiff. The Frabill grease works better.

I've been using this stuff for years. It does not get stiff and it stays right where you put it... There is enough in one tube to do all your tip ups and the wheel bearings on your boat trailer too. ;D

That should flow nice through the little grease gun. Will force all the water out.

I use WD-40. Works great as a spray attractant too on my artificial baits. ;)

Seriously, Frabill Sub-Zero lube. Just don't pack too much in, it can cause drag.

You can use what Beaver Dam puts in at the factory: http://www.unclejosh.com/beaverdam/modules/cart/products.php/nav_id/164/page/1/id/308/name/NoFreezeGrease

How many beaver dam tip ups can you grease with one tube? It doesn't say how big the tube of grease is. I have 9 beaver dam tip ups.

I was referring to the uncle josh beaver dam grease in the link, I would certainly think it is good grease since that is what comes in the beaver dams from the factory.

I have an even dozen beaver dams. Some are very old and I have only greased 1 in over 30 years. The stuff in it was brown goop. I fugured someone had greased it in past as most of my stuff is second hand. I used the frabill tube and I bet you could easily do 2 tipups with 1 tube. It did not take much. As stated there are some good how to vids on you tube about this,   Steve
