Title: Official Henry's lake trip 2017 thread
Post by: muskyon46 on Oct 06, 2017, 09:11 PM
Figured I had better just start this thread and get some info out on here for the shanty folk even though emails have been flying for weeks now. Sorry to overload you guys with the updates. So I talked with Kevin and we are all booked up for December 1-4, as usual ice permitting. The plan right now is to head up early Friday morn,  fish Friday Saturday & Sunday and then head home Monday morn. So let's get to talking! Oh and by the way thanks to photobucket I can't post our favorite pic of prospector holding that monster cut. Lol

I am getting the fever pretty bad lately. Can’t wait to see you guys on the ice! How much traveling do you guys plan on doing  on the ice?  Trying to decide if I want to bring my car or take the suburban with the snowmobile. Last year the snowmobile was fun but I didn’t use it much fishing in the kiddie pool.Looks like the temperatures are going to be pretty cold in about 10 days up there.

I am game to move around now that my sled is running like a champ. I wish we would get some snow so I can go up and run it for a few miles just to make sure I am good to go on a journey to find them Palm trees  ;D ;D. No but really I would like to run around this year up there.

Funny you say that. Last time I was down your way, I almost did just that. Might still have to give it a shot! I’m not sure how much a guy would learn on Henry’s as far as Contour lines go, but it would sure be interesting to find out.

You know Kevin might cut you a deal on renting one of his boats and then all you would have to do is take the ice setup for your helix. Tell him it's recon for our ice trip and for a good cause. Lol. Jk

Thought you guys are hitting first ice up there?  Not sure how useful those sleds will be if you're trying to keep from going through... But I guess they ride sleds across open water so just keep the throttle pegged... Hope you get a great trip this year... Been hearing lower numbers of fish this year, but better size than usual, bring in the 10 lber.... Later J

For the most part every year we've been up there's been plenty of ice for a machine. Seems like the 1st weekend of ice up its a bit sketchy but then by the next weekend its up to 6in or more

I also have been messing around with my sled and getting some parts ordered. Yesterday I modified the rear bumper so that it comes out parallel to the top back portion of the tunnel instead of up at an angle matching the angled bottom portion of the tunnel if that makes any sense. The reason for doing that is so my new plano 1819 box will mount up a little bit better on it. I am also still gathering parts to make my auger mount. Also did some maintenance on the sled itself with a new speedometer key, replaced burn out light bulbs, greased everything etc. I still need to change the chaincase oil and figure out why the hand warmers don't work but I should be good to go by the time the Henry's trip rolls around.

Title: Re: Official Henry's lake trip 2017 thread
Post by: massNtrash on Nov 06, 2017, 10:02 AM
Matt's email this morning got me thinking about the trip and big fish and wondering about what the catch and release records are so I looked them up.

Brook Trout           22"      12/11/2016       Henry's Lake
Rainbow Trout       23.5"    1/1/2017          Henry's Lake

I think that both of these are obtainable to beat. They have to be beaten by 1/2" minimum and there is a process to go through to get it submitted but I think it would be pretty cool if someone in our group was to break one or both of these records on our trip.
Title: Re: Official Henry's lake trip 2017 thread
Post by: muskyon46 on Nov 06, 2017, 10:37 AM
Oh yes I belive your right on that, I have no doubt these records get broke regularly and the person just doesnt want to go thru the process to get it entered. You know after texting with Hutbomber earlier we are going to have almost 30 people fishing out of the Rose. Man thats a crew. Someone should get a hog for sure if not all of us (wishful thinking)   ;)2  As for the email this morning about the friendly side pot. Its looking like we'll probably have Friday just be the warm up so as not excluded early/late arrivals and Saturday/Sunday being the fish counting days. This is for biggest by length atleast witnessed by one other person which will not be a prob as we are usually fishing in a group anyways, although I would like to venture over to stayleys/county dock area to try at some brookies but as stated I'm sure there will be a few that do. This is not set in stone and will be stated in another email as as I get some more feedback from the others in the group. Not all are on the shanty so email it is

If it's true it will be good to share the ice with you once again. Tore it up with the vertigo head you gave me and cutters all last ice season.

Here's a photo of the ice conditions from last weekend in goosebay, we have been talking about it on the Idaho R&C board. 2 people went thru but from the way it looks it may have not been very deep water. Photo credit goes out to Curt69, I imgage tagged off of bft. Hopefully the temps drop like they are supposed to and stay down

Nice joe you beat last years start time on the sled. Conditions at Henry's are good in some areas

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1936541786673461&id=1375754239418888&__tn__=-R (https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1936541786673461&id=1375754239418888&__tn__=-R)

But not all

https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1937316006596039&id=1375754239418888&__tn__=%2As%2As-R (https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1937316006596039&id=1375754239418888&__tn__=%2As%2As-R)

With the temps dropping starting Monday night our trip should be just fine. I think the areas that have had ice this whole time will be plenty safe for the machines by Friday. We may just have to rethink wheelers vs. sleds. I was planning on bringing my bike with the chains on anyways. Either way on foot around the rose will do also. Be safe on whatever day you head up joe

I read a post last night about a guy fishing out of Staley Springs and he said the ice where he was was only 3.5" and deteriorating from the top and the bottom. He also said that the fishing was slow. I also read that it is taking a 4x4 to get into the state park ramp.

Good news, only took me 15 minutes to realize my Kill switch was on when I fired up the snowmobile this year. It took me 30 minutes last year! Man I’m good!
I hate it when I do that, or the key is off...then I've flooded it and have to nearly kill myself before it will start.... been there done that... Later J

Ok so I just talked with Kevin at the rose and the ice there is holding out just fine. He's had people fishing in there and doing pretty good. His south marina where the stream comes in has opened up a bit since yesterday and probably will more by Monday. The north marina is doing just fine. He did say there's a bit of water on the ice which is no Prob as long as the cap holds out and the temps drop Monday night like it's predicted. Everything should stiffen back up by Dec 1st. Now on a good note Kevin did get his web cam up and here it is for your viewing pleasure. I'm going to post a couple different ones and see what works

I don't know how it refreshes but the bottom link is a direct link to the cam on his web site for the rose. From what I'm looking at here and not much snow forecasted in the next week better plan on taking wheelers if possible not sleds  :'(

More snow forecast for Monday 11/27 with sub-freezing temps 24/7 through Dec 6.  Also, the forecast says snow on Dec 2 & 3.  Mondays snow, if decent, should hold until we get there with temps that low (I hope).

For sure, probably have to make that call Tuesday or Wednesday night. See what the temps actually do up there. It won't be a Prob with the room. Kevin is well aware of how it goes and will work with us as he has in previous years

Has anyone heard if ice is holding up or not? Planning on heading up tomorrow? Weather channel says its 45 degrees at lake right now and there was only 3-4 inches of ice last weekend.

From what I'm seeing on that cam at the rose I would probably not trust that ice right now. This coming weeks forecasted temps should firm it back up. What cap is left has to make it only a coupe more days. Oh and yes it's actually 46deg up there right now. Here's a link to the temp sensor by the state park entrance. Click this link

Seen a guy on the cam fishing this morning just outside the south marina so the ice must be thick enough for foot traffic for sure. Figured as much with the reports that have came in in the last few days. The temps finally dropped below freezing last night so just one more day to go and if the forecast holds true it will be building ice  :woot:

I will probably go to the state boat ramp and maybe Staleys depending on the ice. Not sure exactly when I will head out because of conditions. I will definitely see you Thursday though! Drive safe.

Well you guys know when we'll be there, definately wish it was sooner. Hey geezer are you bringing a wheeler? I don't think it's going to be razor worthy this year for sure but you never know. Remember last year 2-3in of ice and people falling thru the weekend before we got there and then we ended up with 6-8+in off ice. As it goes for me right now just bringing my little 250 wheeler. Either way the walking will be easy. Don't forget your ice cleats everyone. Only 1 more day off these ridiculous temps

Latest forecast still shows snow on Monday (90% chance) but no snow on Wednesday.  And now snow on both Saturday & Sunday.  Looking good for my power sled.  And temps all week long (starting Monday night) between 10 and 33.  Should build the ice up by next weekend to a safe level for walk-ons for sure and maybe for machines.

Looking at the cam again this morning and right now,  the same guy has been there 3 days in a row now. I'm  wondering if it's curt. He keeps going back to the same area just outside the south marina where curts brother got that big fish just after we left last year. Funny thing is that cam runs real time it's a little jumpy but you can tell when they're running for the pole. Definately getting bites.

Fishondan just put up a good report over on the Idaho R&C board. 5-6in of ice at state park. Said the edge was a little sketchy but I'm sure the temps this week will take care of that. Can't get a confirmed thickness from the rose area but I'm sure it's not far off of that. I'll get a $ breakdown out by Tuesday for the room. Just plan on doing like last year, go into the office when you get there and pay them your portion. Man its going to be a long week!!

What do I need to bring for bait?  Crawlers?  Waxies?  Mealies?  All of the above?  What about scents?  Do you use them
or are they not needed?  I don't fish for trout through the ice that much.

You trying to be funny. Lol "don't fish for trout much thru the ice". From what I got from windriver's post, he's been using mealworm on his jacker rods and nite crawler on his jigging rods. I'm planning on taking waxies, mealies & crawlers. As for scents I usually don't use it there but if i do its the powerbait trout juice.

I know mine would but at this point who cares I'm ready to fish. Lol just got done loading up the wheelers ourselves. Still need to go over the list a coupe hundred times but I'm sure by Thursday it's going to be good to go. Don't forget the ice cleats everyone

It's fun watching you guys get excited.  I most likely be at a wrestling tournament so one less person to compete with for fish.
Last week we fished one complete day and two mornings.  99% of our fish were caught on jigs tipped with mealworms.  I pull the heads off the mealworms and think of them as a scent packet.  50% of the fish were caught with jaw jackers using very small jigs and 50% were caught actively jigging white paddle bugs .
The real key was setting up early.  75% of the fish were caught before 9:00 am.
Good Luck

Has anybody seen a hook setter called "The Snapper" made by Automatic Fisherman?  I already have one Jaw Jacker, but this new for 2017 product looks interesting.  If available locally (Cabelas, SW, Fish Tech, Scheels, etc.) I'd like to pick up one or two for the Henry's trip.

They are not available yet, me and fishon1 have orders in but he is still working on the molds. Was supposed to have them this month but it's been pushed out till end of December and that's directly from the owner. Stores will probably not have them in until January sometime. We both picked up a couple jawjackers for this trip. If your wanting anymore jawjackers dicks has a 25% deal going today. Order online ship to store and go pick it up in Layton for about $32 out the door. Have you guys looked at the cam? It's snowing pretty good

Joe made it up and went to the rose 1st. Ice conditions on the north marina were only 2in as far as he dared walk out alone, maybe thicker out further. It should improve to atleast foot traffic for ice fishing by Friday. Machines probably not so much, well see. It seems the edges are the worst, like in the spring time. A plank might not be a bad idea to take. No dice at the south marina but we already new that. He next went to the state park and found a solid 3.5-4in and is setting up for the night. Did get a pretty cool screen shot of him on the cam while we were talking on speaker. Lows tonight around 20 highs tomorrow upper 20's and then down to the low teens tomorrow night. Good ice building temps

Update on ice- joe has a solid 6-7in a little further out from the state park ramp which is great. It's possible there's some thicker ice out of the break wall at the rose I'm guessing. Either way joe will have a game plan pinned down by the time we arrive on Friday. It's looking good  :woot: :woot: :woot:

GOD I hope I can work all of my crap out and make it up there! That last picture has me all fired up. I am still in limbo but plan on getting all of my stuff loaded up this afternoon so when I get the word I can leave Thursday afternoon or Friday Morning. What is everyone thinking as far as machines now? With the 2" of snow they got last night I would think that that would be enough to keep my sled cool especially with the scratchers. My wheeler is also an option but would have to switch all of my gear over. My sled I would think is better on thinner ice because the footprint is much larger but I don't know. I have never had my wheeler on the ice before.

Very impressed with it so far. I will try it out on a 10 inch Nils  sometime this trip. I thought it was overkill for such a small auger and that maybe I should just use my drill, but I do like having the two handles and if you angle right you can keep the battery off the ice. Please don’t tell my English teacher how long my last sentence was. LOL

Thats a good one slap, so we've got 4in in the marina you can't see on the cam and 5-6in on the main lake outside the breaker walls. Only Prob is the pressure ridge between the 2. We should have it figured out tomorrow on how well get wheelers on the main lake no Prob. If and when it gets to 7-8in by Saturday fo.r sure. State park grew an inch last night. Caught over a dozen in the marina tonight nothing over 23in but beautiful fish. Be safe see everyone tonight or tomorrow

Hey Guys,

It was a blast smokin' & jokin' with all y'all.  And I met a bunch of new folks whose names shall be lost forever due to that old age disease called CRS.   ;D

The really sad part of the trip was the dozens of fish I didn't catch.  My grand total for three days looking was one (1).  Just about everybody there did better than I did.  I have better hopes for the rest of the season.

Ok finally time for some pics and a little story, so for the 1st time going fishing here we had a great view of the Tetons on our way up. I have seen them before from the other side but what a spectacular view to see again

We arrived at the Rose and had a great 4 days there. The Wild Rose has always treated us good for the last few years. This year we went big and rented the biggest room they had, it had 11 beds, 3 bathroom, full kitchen & living rom. Here's a few shots of the room and some of the happenings that took place. Of course we played some poker and a few of us layed around watching football sunday while it was a blizzard outside

We had some good days and bad on this trip, they got worse as we stayed there but was treated to a good drive home on Monday. The 1st day started out great for me. I pulled in 5 fish. Nothing bigger than 21in. Here's some scenery 1st, then the fish porn

Now for the fishy's, these are in no paticular order. Only 3 rods were lost in the making of this. LOL.. I'm working on getting a good one of the $$$ winner, it was 27in. 9lbs.

I caught this fish on the 2nd day and it was swimming right hand circles like no other. Don't think its whirling disease but im no biologist

Now on the 2nd day we had a couple people hit some soft spots on the edge and test out the floatation on their bikes. Both machines were successfully retrieved with the help of the great crew we were fishing with. In fact one guy tried out his float suit in the process of retrieval

Now for what I think was the best pic of comraderie between fellow ice heads and possibly a new way to spend a day on the ice by upping the competion. You can have 5 rods, so why not!! This is what I'm calling the "2 pole 1 one hole bet, Jacker style" No rules, just see who has the better jig/bait for what the fish are wanting in one hole and while your at it have a nice little arm wresting tournament too

Once again I would like to thank everyone that came up and had another GREAT year at Henry's. Looking forward to year 5 already, Oh and I forgot to mention we may just have to turn this into a gear swap/trade/giveaway/fishing trip with all the stuff that went on. Thanks for the speaker Joe that thing works great. Thanks Glen for the salts and mud paste. The wife and I are trying it out. Definately takes some getting used to. Now lets see some pics I didnt get!!!!!

I'll have 5 jackers/snappers next year for sure because as usual im taking pics BS'ing a bit. We had things a bit more spread out until it got nasty then you had to have them close. Especially the dead sticks. Some of those fish were no joke, one bite and the pole was gone down the hole. 3 poles sacrificed on this trip

Known as lordosis which an upward curvature of the spine vs. scoliosis which is a lateral curvature of the spine.

Can have several causes: parasite damage to the spine or physical damage to the spine early in life, nutritional deficiency, or bad recessive genes that manifest themselves due to inbreeding.

I have seen this in a few of the yellow perch I hatch and raise and we don't have whirling disease here.  Nor does whirling disease affect yellow perch that I know of.
