One of my early spots has been teasing me for weeks. Skim ice starts building than 50° couple cold nights and skim ice maybe even an inch or two than another few warm days. Guessing I could have gotten out if I really wanted to but haven't felt like pushing the limits just yet till we get some Colder weather

Keep it safe! JDL

Just joined the forum, and relatively new to ice fishing. This will be my third season on the ice, and I’m raring to get out there. There’s a small, shallow pond nearby (upper Passaic County) that I think has good potential for some early ice action, maybe as soon as next week. About 2/3 of it was ice last Saturday, and with this cold snap, I’m betting the entire surface is ice by now. Anybody else in Northern NJ watching their local small ponds for early ice opportunities?

yes, but very carefully... my first trip is usually on a lake that i know very well (as far as how it freezes depending on conditions) and we use two guys at least, rope, pfd, spikes and spud.  check the whole area we are fishing until we know it's safe and then have at it.  So far it's been a no go, but i'm hopeful for this weekend.  if not might be heading north into ny or pa.

Not safe to go out yet (only two inches on my home lake) but yesterday I put my first fish on the ice of the 2019-20 anyway. Hooked a little perch from the dock step  ::), testing out my 10-year old’s new flasher. Heading up to south-central VT on Saturday. Hoping for ice on the pond there that we can actually walk on.

I don’t know how thick the ice is, but I saw guys out on Monksville yesterday.  ???

Me and a buddy were out on Monksville on Friday. Only guys out to my knowledge. Many people stopped at the ramp to check the ice or watch us, suppose they were waiting for one of us to go in.  ;D

I weigh 135 and he weighs almost 260...and we were alright. It was definitely sketchy though. Checked the ice the whole way out and didn’t stray far from the ramp. 3” of ice but the top 1/2” or so started to soften up and crack throughout the day. Made it through with no incidents though. I wouldn’t have dared to do it again yesterday, the ice was deteriorating too fast by the time we left.

Ended up with one small ‘eye I caught jigging, and two flags but both fish dropped.

We’re gonna get screwed with this weather coming up. Looks like we may have a shot towards the end of New Years week, but that’s iffy. I’ll be in PA for all of this week, hopefully can find some hard water out that way.

Saturday saw the ice completely go away on my home lake. Monksville is mostly open water. Looking at the extended forecast, it may be quite some time, if at all, before there’s any hard water fishing opportunities in Northern NJ. Steelhead anyone?

Fear not gentlemen. If the weather does what its supposed to, we’ll be on the ice by the end of next week.

Just don’t quote me on that.  ;)
