Any help with the local minnow situation?

Been getting minnows at Brown Bear Tackle for the past several years. He has a great setup and the minnows last a while. Mud minnows and Dace. He's at 836 Development Drive.

Going to check out Cronk lake today and maybe hit Loughborough on the way back, will let you guys know how we do.

Hey guys, sorry for the delayed reply.

Got out onto Cronk for a few hours. Picked up minnows at Brown Bear Tackle in Kingston, nice and healthy, and headed to the boat launch off of Bedford Road. Decided to fish the mouth of the little bay on the northeast corner of the lake. Didn't find any splake but we managed a bunch of crappie. Was a nice day. Locals say it is tough fishing for splake, hit or miss, haven't seen many recently, yadda yadda.

Next day hit up Upper Rock Lake. What a beautiful spot. Parked at the launch on the north end (looks like there might be another access about halfway down the lake?) and setup shop due east out off the far point; kinda near the perma hut that is out there. Fished anywhere from 5' to 40' and only managed one first or second year splake. Had a bunch of flags fire but no hook ups....might need stinger hooks? Tried both dorsal and tail hooking but nothing worked. Was a great day out there, saw some other groups/atvs dunno how they did.

Somewhat discouraging, but I'd like to give it another go next time I'm in the area.

Anyone been out on the lakes near Plevna?  I'm guessing this warm weather is going to shorten the ice season.

Hi Roberz, where are you headed near Plevna?  I am thinking of visiting my camp on Cananto Lake on Saturday.  Might drill a hole to see what the ice is like, but will probably just sit by the fire and head over to Wheelers Pancake House - I'm sure they will be boiling SAP and making syrup.

Wish I was going anywhere near there. Had to cancle my plans to go north this winter. I'm from Ohio and our season was about 5 days long this year. 61 degrees at 1030 in February  is crazy. I'm just enjoying watching you guys post pics. May try to go up for some spring trout if I can make things work. We normally fish the schooners and some of the back country lakes when we do make it up.

Still lots of ice around folks. On Thursday I fished a lake just North East of Verona that had over 2' of solid black ice. There was some water on top,  looking at the long forecast these Lakes should be in play for a while. I drilled 6 different holes in 25-20' of water. In 2 holes the bottom 4' was full of small perch in another I found Blue Gills from bottom to 5' below the hole my Vex was a mess of marks. The one hole produced big perch but was slow.
Then night came & I decided to sit in the hole that produced all the Gills, at 6:30pm the gills receded to the bottom & out came the Crappies. I ended up catching 27 Crappie 90% came from 4' below the hole in 24' of water. The took everything I threw at them as long as it glowed.
Anyways get out there & be safe boys! Fingers crossed March is the coldest month of this winter!

Nice Crappie!
We went out to a small backlake this morning. The good news... no snow or slush so easy walking with cleats on, 14.5 inches of ice still.  The bad news... after 40+ holes and 3 hrs we only found dink perch.

Went to the same lake a week later and still 13"+ of ice. This time I was actually looking for the schools of the small perch because I had my youngest daughter with me and wanted her to catch something. We found them and they were finicky but Claire still managed to get a couple before she got bored. Now that she has figured out the sonar doesn't look like Iam going to get a chance to use it again!

That's awesome JZ! Kids really don't care about size vs fish caught! Great job!

Anyone fishing up north of Highway 7? How's the ice up that way? I'm considering heading up the 41 this weekend to hit a few small trout lakes.

I went to a couple of my usual early ice lakes today and they aren’t ready yet, couple inches of ice in the shallows couldn’t get more than 10 ft from shore. Going to take a few more days for these lakes anyway, might have to target some shallow bays and stay close to shore if I want to get out this weekend. Stay safe

Good morning everyone,

I have been slow this year in getting out as I have been preparing for retirement and as of this week I have completed my 40 year professional career and I am now ready to start 365 fishing. Hahaha.

Getting some good reports from friends going out on the ice on several different lakes. Lots of opportunity for slaying the ice monsters.  Some great reports from Dog Lake for splake.  2 - 3 lb’ers the average with a few in the 4 - 6 lb range.

Will start to post more info over the next few days.

Tight lines to all.

For all those interested in fishing Verona Lake, here is a bathymetric map I made using my using my sonar a mapping program I bought a few years ago.  While the depths vary slightly with the water levels it has served me well both during soft and hard water seasons.

Good luck and tight lines!
