Last winter we were all about building a new house. My first house, an 8x10 is filled with flaws. Skis are number one. I did 4x4''s with 2" metal conduit underneath. It glides like it has ice skates until the snow gets too high. Then forget it, snowplow.
I always tell people next time, my skis will be built huge. Less regard for weight with the skis, just make em right. Think about it, you can roll a car by hand on flat pavement, but stuck in mud, no way. The weight is less important than the resistance the ground can add.
I was gonna replace my 10' sled trailer with a car trailer or something, and build a house to fit it. Like a 7x16 or something. I do have buddy's with car trailers so maybe I'll just build and call in a favor till I get my own.
I sleep in mine alot, so I want it big. I also have always really wanted a closet for a portopotti. Besides me, there's a wife and 3 kids, could be a game changer.

I agree completely on the skis.  I did try and save weight, but I didn't comprise because of weight.  I hauled my 8x12 out one year and stopped a little early with the snow machine and needed to move the shack 30 more feet to be in the honey hole.  I couldn't move, the sled was spinning on ice with zero traction once I stopped.  We unhooked the snow machine and me and a buddy pushed the shack 30' no problem.  I bet the shack weighed a 1000lbs or so, but with good skis it slid awesome.   We need to build shacks that we can haul with snow machines up this way.  The lake we fish has groomed trails on both sides with a few local residents and several cabin owners that wouldn't appreciate fisherman tearing up the trails.  I have never hauled a shack 10x16, but i'm fixing to in a few months ;)

I plan on using a deep cycle marine battery and an inverter to power the shack.  I will use led lights and will have a flat screen TV that will make up the power draw.  I'm wondering if I will need my 2000 watt generator to charge the battery after a few days of use.  Any recommendations?  The TV will be set up to run with the underwater camera and for DVDS for the little ones to keep them interested after a few days in the shack.  I know charging batteries will give of hydrogen and sulfuric acid, so charging the battery in the shack may not be such a good idea.

I use my deep cycle for powering the lights in my shack and to charge cell phones and fish finders ect.  I found that you only get like 2 or 3 movies when I run my tv off the battery so I will be using a generator just for movies so I can save my batt for lights and stuff. I am using an inverter off the batt to run everything and the inverter alone draws a lot off power that might be why I can't watch that many movies.  How is Dube running his setup, I know he runs his tv off his batt but I don't know how many movies he gets.

I don't think Dube used the TV much.  I will probably run the lights and charge a few things as well with the battery and use the Generator for the TV.

When I wired solar at the cottage this summer, it was a rainy day so I let my son watch our 27" tube TV and satellite for about 5 hours before the battery went.

With regards to the skis filling up with water, my original plan was to displace the water using rigid styrofoam insulation.

Some of the nicest skids I've seen, well done. Makes me want to ditch my 8x12 for an 8x16!

Thanks, My buddy has an 8x16 and it made my 8x12 look small.  With the new machines out today people are able to build bigger and still haul their shacks.  I hauled his shack no problem, so I figured on trying a little bigger.

Just got home from two weeks off work, so no progress has been made.  I have two weeks off starting today so I will have plenty of time to get after it.

Been hard at her last few days here are a few pics of the progress.

The brackets are set up for 2" pipe for front and back.  The back is for jacking and pulling with a strap if stuck or what have ya.  I will have a solid hitch in the front set up for a ball receiver and a pintle hitch.

Drilled holes for wiring 12v and 110v and insulated today.

Oh there is no doubt that it is heavy, not sure if I want to know what it is going to weigh.  All the other shacks I built weight was number one.  With this shack I know it is going to be heavy and that is why I went with 12'' wide skis.  I think this shack will haul better than my 8'x12' with 6'' skis.  It will have way less drag with the hitch set up and lowest point being 8".  I have plenty of pulling power with a tracked Argo and swt 800 skandic, so one way or another it is going to go.  The lake has groomed trails that run on both sides and  with a donation to the grooming funds they will groom to the shack, even drop the blade and move any berms.  The plan is to buy land on the lake (some day) and use the shack as a cabin in the summer months and ice shack in the winter.  Best of both worlds.  For the time being I pay to leave the shack at the lodge so I don't have to haul it home.   When in high school we use to haul 8x10 shacks with what we had, and that was not much.  Wish I had pictures of it.  Usually it was the ol safari scout or 340 Polaris long track or both in tandem with a pry bar between the skis and a tow rope hooking them together.  I had buddy ridding on the front of the scout the keep the skis on the ground so I could steer;D

As far as weight and safety its all about PSI, with those big skis your pounds per square inch will be low.  I would bet this shack with big skis is easier on the ice than a smaller shack with little skis.  Awesome build!

I bought slider windows two at 24''x24'' and one slider at 36''x36''.  I roughed the door in for a 32''x80'' door and since it is a pain to find exterior doors that swing out I'm getting one built at spernards.  You are right, the PSI will be low because of the skis and that's what I was banking on.  The initial start will be tougher, but once it is moving it should slide no problem.

How do you plan to insulate the roof? Will it be sealed air tight?

with 2'' board insulation pressed against the 2x4's.  It wont be air tight, it will breath above the 2x4s out the front and back.

Few more pictures.  Finished the roof, ran all the wire for 110 v and the 12v system and started the 1/4'' tong & groove on ceiling.

Got all the electrical boxes mounted, plugs and switches wired up.  Decided to test them all before setting the vapor barrier and sheeting.  Hope to get the inside sheeted tomorrow.

It looks great and was a good idea to test all the electrical before you finished the inside.  Did you insulate the roof?

I put 3 1/2 '' of insulation on the floor so it would be tight between the flooring helping to make the floor more solid.  The walls and ceiling have 2'' of insulation, with spray foam in any gaps and I caulked all the seams.

Pics weren't thought of when we were kids, today everyone has a phone and can take pics when ever. Memories of days gone by just have to stay in our heads. I have lots of memories of fishing on a sled made from a pop crate, dragging it out on the lake looking for a hole that didn't have much ice so I could open it with my boot, and using perch eyes from yesterday for bait. I bet seeing pics of you guys dragging a permy out with 2 sleds would be quite a sight. Shack is looking good keep the pics coming, and take some pics on the ice.
