Doc what is "centerpinning" I've heard the term but haven't been able to figure out what it is...I know it is used for steelies so I figured you'd know

fly rod fishing. it's what they call the fly rod reel in short.

centerpin fishing is not fly rod fishing fwiw.its a large arbor reel that has no drag but spins on a pin with 2 bearing inside.it lets you present your bait at the exact river speed.the reel free spins in the current at the exact speed the river is flowing making your presentation as natural as  can be.mainly for float/jig fishing for salmon/steelhead.my reel will  spin for 10 minutes with a good crank on the handle.we  use longer rod say 11ft 6 to 15ft to keep the line mended and off the water so the float doesn't drag.these guys were my inspiration to start pinning and show a great example of center pinning.

3 more inches of rain on the way for today and tonight. we are in a flood warning.

thanks for the explanation of center pin fishing. seems a fly reel could do the same if you release the drag.

So it's slip bobber fishing with extremely long rods and goofy giant in line reels.... Whatever catches fish man lol.... Looks expensive tho... I got a boat but idk if it can handle fast currents it's only a 3 horsepower and these horses aren't too speedy in the water lol

You don't need a giant reel just a float/drift spinning rod and reel my float fishing set up is a 9 foot 6 inch okuma Celio salmon steel rod.. in a medium light action good for 6 to 12 pound test..  lures 1/8 to 1/2 ounce.. total cost $40... as for  reels I got a shimano sedona I use for fishing I got three c5000 that work awesome for it..  loaded with 12  pound mono iam sure you can get away with a 4000 size shimano no problems..  I just go bigger then needed .. even Pfluger good reels to do this with .. then all you need is bobbers jigs and lead shot and hooks if throwing spawn.. and some waxies leaders etc I use 6 and 8 number for steel and 10 and 12 for salmon ..

I have been fishing the wall so have not float fished in probably 3 years

This is a Alantic I cought last week end fishin the wall.. but if you want to steel head float fishing is the way to go this time of year.. that or drift  flies

Feels like we should still be on the ice. Oh well, been hitting the river for Steelhead since ice out.

Good luck to everyone! Warmer weather should be on the way I think.....

A nice 55* this morning. Hopefully the air conditioner gets a rest for a few days. We got a real surprise yesterday around noon NE of Howard City. A 20+ minute heavy down pour. The first real rain fall in quite a while.

Cooler this morning which is a welcomed turn of events - still no significant rain, but the weekend forecast shows some promise as we definitely can use it.  Like Doc said, the corn is hurting, lawns are toasted brown, and the river where I'm at is as low as ever for July.  I do enjoy the warm weather months, but I truly do prefer walking outside hearing crunchy snow instead of this crunchy grass...
