Building an 8x12 (UPDATED September 28th)
« on: Apr 05, 2010, 09:24 AM »
Now that the lawn has dried out and I can set up to work, my wife and I are beginning the build of our 8x12 sleeper.  The trailer was given to me and on it's way home last summer, I blew a spring apart while towing it. I tied up the axle and towed it the rest of the way home.  Right now, I have the frame up on jack stands. This week, I will hopefully install the new springs.  I will post pics of the build as we progress.

Just found this pic from when we brought it home

April 4th, 2010

4/24

Worked on the new stove today. I cleaned it up and repainted it. I stuck a short stack on it and fired it up! I also installed the new Custom quick release pins for the spring/axle assembly.  More pics will follow early in the week when I am not on dial up!

Condition at time of purchase

After restoration and paint w/ first fire

Here is the pics of the custom pins for the springs

4/28/10

Project on hold

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND UPDATE

Now that I am done turkey hunting and had some nice weather to work, I put the wire brush and paint to the trailer

I mounted the springs and axle with the custom pins that were made specifically for this build

Hubs were mounted also

I ordered new wheels and bought two tires from my buddy for $10

Everything mounted

I see so far there was 52 Views and only 1 post. Perhaps they don't know if they would post a little something, like good job, or thats neat, they would be updated on your every post. In the "New replies to your post".         Just like I just did. ;D          Can't wait to see it in the process.

I am going to pin the springs instead of bolt them on so when I get it out on the ice, I can pull the springs and axle out from under it!

Are you gonna undercoat the frame before attaching anything to it? Here in Wi/MN they use so much salts it's a must!!   Whats your list/stock pile of goodies looking like?

It is not going to be towed that much. I think it will make an appearance at a few derbies but otherwise, it will be put out and left.  I am going to wire brush it and use the spray undercoating

NH Troutfisherman has an entire boatload of metal studs that we will be using as the frame work.  Other than that, the only other thing that is determined at this point is we are going to put this in it as my wife loves to cook!

I plan on gas. I like the atmosphere they create.

No work done this weekend. I spent a day and a half doing a brake job on a Honda Civic SI.  ::)

If the weather is nice, I might hang the springs tonight and figure out what I need from there.

Good job-that's neat ;D Seriously though I'm looking forward to the progress, looks like you've got a good foundation to start with.

Yesterday I asked my father to fabricate some pins for me as I can't seem to find exactly what I want. (he is a tool and die maker.)

They will be here soon. As soon as they are in, I will hang the springs and order the axle, hubs, and tires. From there, we will begin the construction!

No building this weekend. The wife had a small fender bender which will put the build on hold for a bit. However, I did have some custom pins made for easier removal of the axle!

Just picked this up for $75.00

The guy I bought it from said he bought it from a friend that worked on rail cars and it came out of a caboose.

Here is a picture of one that is brand new.

great find!

Thanks! I have always hated wood stoves in shacks because of the room they take up. This one is 20"x20" across the top and only 2' tall!  It takes a 10" piece of wood or coal.  Can't wait to slap a frying pan on top and cook some eggs and sausage!

I am pretty sure that this is an origonal stove and not a reproduction. The only markings on it are: 295 SUN LAKESIDE FOUNDRY CHICAGO ILL.

I can't find any info on the net.

Duck Doctor the wood stove cleaned up nicely looks brand new. The stove should heat up the shanty , nice that you can burn wood or coal.

Undercoating is a really GREAT piece of advice. A couple cans would completely do the frame and the protection you'd have would be imeasurable. Mom and I had a great time working with you yeasterday.

Looking good Duck Doctor.

You might want to consider having the bottom of your shack painted with the truck bed liner.

Rhino liner is really tough, and it will help keep your shack in prime condition for many years.

Hope this helps,

You may want to reconsider removing the axles.

a friend of mine made metal skis and welded them to the frame on the bottom of his shack.

He just uses a jack, and takes the wheels off.  This puts the hubs about 4" above the ice.

He can pull it anywhere, and bonus, no one can take it unless they bring a set of tires with 'em.
