Title: Building an 8x12 (UPDATED September 28th)
Post by: duck doctor on Apr 05, 2010, 09:24 AM
Now that the lawn has dried out and I can set up to work, my wife and I are beginning the build of our 8x12 sleeper.  The trailer was given to me and on it's way home last summer, I blew a spring apart while towing it. I tied up the axle and towed it the rest of the way home.  Right now, I have the frame up on jack stands. This week, I will hopefully install the new springs.  I will post pics of the build as we progress.

Just found this pic from when we brought it home

Worked on the new stove today. I cleaned it up and repainted it. I stuck a short stack on it and fired it up! I also installed the new Custom quick release pins for the spring/axle assembly.  More pics will follow early in the week when I am not on dial up!

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND UPDATE

Now that I am done turkey hunting and had some nice weather to work, I put the wire brush and paint to the trailer

I mounted the springs and axle with the custom pins that were made specifically for this build

Are you gonna undercoat the frame before attaching anything to it? Here in Wi/MN they use so much salts it's a must!!   Whats your list/stock pile of goodies looking like?

It is not going to be towed that much. I think it will make an appearance at a few derbies but otherwise, it will be put out and left.  I am going to wire brush it and use the spray undercoating

NH Troutfisherman has an entire boatload of metal studs that we will be using as the frame work.  Other than that, the only other thing that is determined at this point is we are going to put this in it as my wife loves to cook!

I plan on gas. I like the atmosphere they create.

No work done this weekend. I spent a day and a half doing a brake job on a Honda Civic SI.  ::)

If the weather is nice, I might hang the springs tonight and figure out what I need from there.

Yesterday I asked my father to fabricate some pins for me as I can't seem to find exactly what I want. (he is a tool and die maker.)

They will be here soon. As soon as they are in, I will hang the springs and order the axle, hubs, and tires. From there, we will begin the construction!

Thanks! I have always hated wood stoves in shacks because of the room they take up. This one is 20"x20" across the top and only 2' tall!  It takes a 10" piece of wood or coal.  Can't wait to slap a frying pan on top and cook some eggs and sausage!

Undercoating is a really GREAT piece of advice. A couple cans would completely do the frame and the protection you'd have would be imeasurable. Mom and I had a great time working with you yeasterday.

Looking good Duck Doctor.

You might want to consider having the bottom of your shack painted with the truck bed liner.

Rhino liner is really tough, and it will help keep your shack in prime condition for many years.

Hope this helps,

You may want to reconsider removing the axles.

a friend of mine made metal skis and welded them to the frame on the bottom of his shack.

He just uses a jack, and takes the wheels off.  This puts the hubs about 4" above the ice.

He can pull it anywhere, and bonus, no one can take it unless they bring a set of tires with 'em.

Weiner:  I have been all over that site and I think that I am going to purchase the hole covers and sleeves.  I want to remove the axle because we tend to get a lot of water on the ice and having an axle freeze in is not something I want to deal with. Also we target lake trout and being a mile high off the ice is another thing I don't deal with very well.

There is a place in Berlin NH that does spray on bed liners. When we get the axle in and hubs/tires on I am going to give them a call. I would like to get the bottom of the floor done also but the spray can alternative every season might not be a bad idea also.

Next on the list for custom work is a pair of skis that attatch to the tires. I have already got that planned I just need to have the correct tire size we will be going to use.

Also, I might have a draw-tite style hitch made for my sled. That way I can tow it with my sled when I get caught stealing my father's quad!

More pic from the weekend that do not belong in the origonol post. My mother and father came up to visit. We worked on the stove and took a break for some family shooting with my wife and father.  Yesterday evening my wife and I went to cut the first load of wood for the bob house. We were interupted by my 3 year old locking the keys inside the truck with my 8 month old also inside. After an hour of picking the locks, my wife got in!

Thanks!  My aunt owns a resort and it was hit by a really bad wind storm this winter. I could get as many loads like that as I want. I plan on getting 2 more loads and that should give me a little more than a cord of spruce for nothing. The stove only takes a 10" log so I think I will have more than enough for the season. The best part is (only because there is not damage) I have a Birch tree that came down on the roof of my camp. I am cutting that up here soon so that will really put me over the top!

Nice deal on the spruce, that will get a stove hot in no time but burns a little fast sometimes but that birch will definately be a plus to feed after you get some good heat and coals going, we do a lotta red and white oak round here, not much pine left anymore.....

Took advantage of the lack of snow and went for another load of wood.  I figure I have close to a full cord now.  The pile was level across the top before I started bucking it to length and splitting it.

Sweet, that'll be nice and seasoned by the time theres ice!  What are you gonna do for starters? I save my egg cartons, fill each cube with lint from the dryer and drizzle some candle wax on em, each cube will burn HOT for about 5 minutes

Instead of candle wax, try smearing the balls of lint with vaseline. I think you will find it burns better and longer than the candle wax.

That sounds interesting, may have to find some vaseline and give it a go, my wifes a candle fanatic so I have lots of left over candle wax where the wick is gone to use for my starters..

I am going to pin the springs instead of bolt them on so when I get it out on the ice, I can pull the springs and axle out from under it!

I've debated on doing this on my own trailer shack, only to toss the idea because I don't want to screw around with sliding the axle around when ever I want to move it or if the snow is started to get deep, and I didn't want to try to store the axle anywhere when not in use.  I'm thinking the only way for me is crank down axles or something similar to the zack shack with the lever drop down axle.

I've got the twin to that stove and it's been a real life saver when all else fails, heats up chow, hot liquids and also works as a space heater as well!!   Good score!!!!    :)  Oh and don't be afraid to burn unleaded gas in it, might not be a dual fuel model but it'll work just fine.

over the weekend I painted the top of the trailer and flipped it over to begin the underside.  Tonight I will mount the springs to the new axle and mount the hubs. My new rims should be here tomorrow and the tires will be mounted and balance this weekend.

Hopefully the trailler will be towable by sunday!

The best part about the weekend is my wife and I met with our lawyer to start the adoption process of my stepdaughter!

Congrats on the adoption process, hope all goes as planned... As for balancing the tires for the trailer I don't think you have to do that as it's not a steering axle? I know on my 26' TT It's never had balanced tires, may save you a few bucks.....  I'd ask anyways.....

Springs are mounted and the rims are "out for delivery!"  I will be at work until 8pm and with an hour drive home and picking the kids up by 9pm, I don't see any work getting done tonight. I hope to make a run for some more paint tomorrow night.

Won't be long before the floor gets laid!

An unbalanced tire in any location on a vehicle/trailer can cause uneven wear and failure.

That is a $250 score I picked up back in '06 to use while I am guiding in other places than out of my camp!  That is not going to be a shanty!

Nice... I am new to the North Country. Fished NEK all last season and looking to hit the Conn lakes area this winter. I have an ATV, so let me know if you need help setting the shanty and in exchange you can teach me a thing or two

Nice looking project you have going there. I'm planning on building one out of a trailer one day myself. I saw one here in Michigan on Sag. bay that was on a trailer like yours. It had a drop down back door where the hauled the 4 x 4 quad. When they park the truck, the quad came out and had a regular hitch on it, hooked shanty to quad and off the whole thing went. The had chains on all 4 tires, and never had a problem they said pulling. Inside was holes cut in floor the size of 5 gal. pails. They cut the bottoms out of the pails, and when they stopped to fish, would push pail down to ice and fish right through it to keep wind out and away from hole. Worked great. Just a thought for fishing through your floor instead of removing axle. Then I saw the long winow on each side the was hinged, and was wondering why the window opened.......well, they removed ice gear in spring, and it became a portable hunting shack until the next winter! :) Pretty cool idea. Will keep an eye on the thread, looking nice. I like that stove also. I'd like to find a small woodstove like that.

Just bought a Jiffy Model 30 that should help offset the build cost once I clean it up a little!

Wondered where'd ya gone to... Put a TV antenna on mine the othe day with a flat screen 12 volt 13" TV, with the digital converter box it's amazing how many channels I get and also works great to hook the Aqua Vu up to it instead of the little screen!!!!

Well.................. ..I would like to say that we have been working on it but the house I am renting came up for sale again and I put in an offer on that. If everything goes through, I will be closing on the 20th of Aug and then the build will be full steam ahead!  I did pick up another portable though and yet another Jiffy Model 30.

We have been pounding the lakes in search of new places for the hardwater.......let me tell ya..........NHTF and I found a spot that people dream about....cool thing is, it is right here in NH!

The temps have not been really that bad here so far. My fishing season I think might have come to a screaching hault last night when I lost forward and reverse in the boat. I hope to get it fixed but if it is something major, it will have to wait!
