How about a NE get together
« on: Dec 03, 2008, 04:48 PM »
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the great state of Nebraska and wanted to know how everyone would feel about having our own Ice Shanty gathering. I would love to get together and chase some flags, let me know what you all think.

Where are you at in NE?  How long you been here?

This board is usually slow until the ice actually shows up.

I'm down in Falls City. Been here for about 5 months. I would like some input on where. I don't care if I have to drive, I would like to meet some of you guys and hopefully ice some fish. Where do you guys think would be a good place?

Yeah, this place is slow until we get ice, I guess I'm getting antsy. ;)

Thanks for the input guys.

Shawn, you're right bro. I'll see if I can change that sometime... ;D

keep her on there Don...stay true to your roots...but don't fear the branches.

Valentine is a trek...used to go turkey hunting out that way...gorgoeus landscape.  But I've heard the refuge lakes can spit out some nice pike and perch.  Don't know if there is anything else (maybe pannies)...but those are my favorite 2....walleyes are up on that list but I'm not sure there are many walleyes out there.  Guess we should pick a weekend.

I was under the impression that those lakes didn't allow any motor vehicles.  Also, since I think they are federal refuges...aren't there limits on 2-stroke motors??  I thought federal lands banned 2-stroke motors entirely.

So...i read the requirements....no combustion engines...at all.  Well...that bites.  I bought my 4-stroke almost purely on the belief that many places are going to outlaw 2-strokes.  I'm not really interested in hand augering through holes...and I'm not buying an electric.  LOL....

I agree BojiHawk, I'll leave it.  :)

I was wondering about the use of gas augers, as I don't have a hand auger. Do you guys have issues using them on most lakes? Should I invest in a hand auger, just to be safe?

get a good one.  I bought a cheaper one..like $40.  Then I used a Nils Master and it ripped right through ice.  It is worth the extra $....get a good one.

I live here in Valentine and we all use gas augers while ice fishing on the refuge.  I believe the rule applies to no boat motors.  Any how I think a get together up here would be cool.

Fishing should be the exercise of your skills- and its rewards the places it brings you to

yeah from the looks of the regs the combustion motor rule only applies to boat motors.

headed out in the morning.  Will probly go to West Long first to check things out.  Got a coupl;e freinds headed north up by Mission, maybe try for some big pike and another perch hole we stocked 3 yrs ago.  Ice was good on the Mill Pond here in town.  Near 5".

I would be in for the refuge or how about Boardman arm at Merrit?  I used to do pretty good on perch and crappie there but it has been a few years since I hit it.

I've never been there either.  Heard it's an amazing place in the winter.  Just give me a date, and I'll be there!  Have wife, need to fish.

What dates would be good for everybody? Give me some ideas.  Is there a baitshop close by that sells minnows and waxies?

It's best to stop at the Minnow Bucket in North Platte before heading up there.  They have a much better selection of jigs and bait than what's available in Valentine.  There is a Bait shop in Valentine but depending what time of day you get there they may or may not be open.  The Minnow Bucket also has the latest info on the refuge (whats biting, on what and ice conditions) as there are several people from that area that are there frequently.  Any date works for me and it sounds like a great time.
