smelt on tip up's

HI i am a poor :( 14 year old boy who lives in CT, I want to start smelt fishing. if u are able to catch smelt on tip ups what kind should I use? size hook? bait ? pound test line ? The Basic gear i can use to get started . If u know any thing about smelt can u list that as well.

um?? people jig for them using small hooks and 1 maggot or a small piece of worm  i believe they bite light but put on a hell of a fight most guys use really small short ultra light rods   since smelt are ussually on 6 inches long or so

BEN I FISH FOR SMELT ON LITTLEVILLE RESIVOIR IN WESTERN MA.BUY A SMALL JIGGING LURE CALLED A PILKE, THEY COST ABOUT $3.00.THEY ARE A LITTLE MINNOW SHAPED JIG WITH A TINY GOLD CHAIN CONNECTING THE HOOK TO THE JIG.PUT A MOUSY,OR A SPIKE ON THE HOOK AND JIG IT WITH A ULTRA LIGHT JIGGING ROD.THEY BITE VERRY LIGHT SO YOU REALLY HAVE TO SET THE HOOK QUICK. PILKES ARE THE BEST SMELT CATCHERS AROUND I GAURENTEE IT.GOOD LUCK.
