Onto next year!!!
« on: Mar 23, 2021, 02:36 PM »
As the ice melts I cant help but wonder.... What type of leader material do I wanna buy for next year? Fishing pike, looking for reccomendation on steel leader building. Currently using 30#AFW blood red wire with size 3 barrel sleeves.

Any of you guys/gals have reccomendations on good flexible STEEL leader material, thin diameter preffered; with sleeve sizes that match up?

Much appreciated.

Bait it, Jig it, Hook it
Catch it, Clean it, Cook it
Simply put just get out/ and do it

I use the AFW Blood Red and I also use Toothy Critter wire leader made by Cortland I think. Expensive but very thin and strong. It is a tieable wire but I crimp all mine.
Hard water Tight lines Flags up. Doesn't get any better than that

Rio bite wire is my personal favorite. A little more $ than afv but less diameter per lb test and more supple to tie with.

Thanks for the replies, ive seen the toothy stuff you can tie but havent tried it yet. Never heard of the Rio but am going to get some of both because they both sound more flexible than the AFW I'm using now. Wont go floro, not that it cant work. It would get all knicked up and abraised to quickly for my liking. The Rio stuff is pretty pricey but ultimately I am looking for more flexibility than the 1x7 strand im currently using.

Use floro

x2 might just have to retie your leader every now and again.

You’ll get more action and flags off flouro, just take your time with the fish. The group I fish with were about 1/2 and 1/2 wire and flouro.
After all the wire leader guys watch the flouro guys get way more flags Everytime they slowly switched.
Just a matter of preference.

I also worry floro will lead to other species im not targeting too. Like lake trout... We caught multiple of them this year on steel wire but that's gotta be one hungry fish because the water was clean.   I have thought to use the leaders I have in my stripe bass kit, floro, but just can't beat the durability I get with steel. I am going to order 30lb rio, definataly a steel guy so I wanna check out its quality for sure, sounds good and if they made it for fly rods it must flex good.

Toothy Critters is the best.
