Seagulls
« on: Jan 26, 2019, 05:16 AM »
Something that I noticed last year and the start of this season is the lack of seagulls. Used to be at pick up time they would be all around looking for discarded bait. For some reason there doesnt seem to be any at all.

Not really important for ice fishing, but something I have noticed.

Anyone have an idea as to why?

I wonder if it's because the cormorants have taken all of the nesting sites.  I noticed it this summer as well.  They used to be everywhere.

Maybe they finally smartened up and followed the ducks ;D.

There were quite a few seagulls out in Champlain during December, picked up bait from surface feeding browns and salmon. Much of the main lake is still open so they could be there.

Plenty of them at Vantines. Begging for treats worse than any dog. I hate birds........

Wind was brutal. I fished vantines and walked away from a fish bucket to get something from my wheeler. One of those dump ducks flew over my bucket and snagged an 11" perch off the top. Luckily it was too big to carry away and I got it back when it was dropped about 20 yds from the bucket. I am not a fan of gulls. Once when I was fishing for sunnies and gills I left the hole to dump my bucket back at the sled. My best rod was at the edge of the hole and a gull landed and eyed the rocker tipped with spikes. Before I could get over to it the gull grabbed the rocker and then tried to take off. I had one chance to catch the rod as it swung past me and missed. That gull's wings were beating fast like a duck and I watched my best rod climb to about 200 feet and headed south to wherever the gulls spend the night. Like I said..... I hate gulls.
