This is really sad news, so sorry for this guy.
So everyone PLEASE be mindful of the ice you're venturing out onto, this season appears so far to be sketchy, no fish is worth dying for.

It is sad.

Also sad that the number of people going thru the ice so far this season is as high as it is!

I mean, is it really worth risking your life just to catch a fish today rather than tomorrow?

I would have thought with all the comments here, as well as the daily weather reports on TV and radio, that people would have some idea that ALL ice safety will be brought into question.

Hopefully his lesson will serve as a warning for others who might think that it wouldn't/couldn't happen to them, that they are INVINCIBLE and bad things only happen to other people.

Nature abhors a vacuum, change is inevitable, and you can't fix stupid or ignorant.
May we all stay safe and continue to look out for each other, and pray for more ice soon!

Probably not a good weekend coming up in most places. Ice is rotting under and on top.

Sorry, that was in response to the video JMailbox8 shared. I am trying to focus on safety and it was really informative.

My deepest condolences to the family.

Why does everyone seem to think Willoughby has particularly unsafe ice (i.e. needing 12inches to feel safe)?

Inconsistent ice...there are sharp drops. Whenever depths go from shallow to deep, the ice is always thinner over the deep water. I can see exaxtly where the water goes from 10 ft to 18 ft and 20 ft to 45 ft at my house just by looking at the color changes of the ice. People walk all over good ice and then venture out to where a sharp drop is and the ice goes from 10" to 2" in a matter of feet.

Because it is around 310 feet deep, and holds a lot of latent heat. Takes a good few weeks of very cold weather to lock her up usually. Safer ice is found this time of the year on the far northern and far southern ends, where there aren't extreme depth drop offs. Even in the mid/late winter though, I would be extremely careful about venturing out into the middle...

Was at Willoughby today and from boat access to south side was wide open, northend had 8"of solid black ice...met the warden that pulled the man from the lake and tried to revive him nicest warden i have met in quite a while..he pointed to the spot where he passed which was about 100 yards from where i was standing,he said that the ice went from 8 solid to 1 inch in a couple steps (spring?) Moved away from that spot immediately

Sorry for the family, the beloved lake is simply dangerous during early ice conditions.
As the prior post comments, the black ice goes from 8 inches to 1 inch in a matter of
a few steps.
