Ice Fishing spoons
« on: Dec 07, 2015, 05:53 AM »
This is the expensive time of the year for me. Waiting for ice, so I buy new jigs. This year looking at beaded spoons for perch. Anyone here ever use this type of spoon? Probably a good learning curve. I have many different spoon types and they do,at times catch fish. Normally a sweedish pimple with a dropper is my best and did try slender spoons last year with some success. What are your favorite spoons?

McGathy Slab Grabbers, Gusters, Kens, Diamond Willows. The first 3 come in different shapes and sizes.

Yeah but I'm still learning how to fish them. That's what I used mostly last year when I was perch fishing. If you are on an active school they are hard to beat. No need to bait and the barb is covered up by the bead. It helps you get your spoon down quickly.

Wow nice collection. I really like the one in the third row far left. Very much like a perch. I have some similar to these in shape. I alsohave some on order. Mine don,t seem too heavy so I doubt they will drop real fast but ought to flutter well. Going to really put in some effort this season. Which of these spoons are your favored ones?

The ones that I did the best on last year where the long skinny ones in the bottom 2 rows. I like to use the larger spoons to draw in perch from a distance. If they wont commit to those then I'll switch to a smaller spoon.

Good to know will get some slender ones in chrome and gold red bead and chartreuse. They do this on the great lakes but a perch is a perch barring other conditions it should work here if on a good school.

Finally got some beaded spoons. A lot of different stuff out there and no way to sample it all so will try what I have bought. Now just need ice. From the weight of these spoons I believe they will be shallow water only.

I have some that I made years ago out of bullet brass in both gold (brass) and silver. I'm going to get out the lure making tools (handed down from my grandfather) and see about making some more.

Goldfish and phoebes are old-timey favorites too. I have some swedish pimples I just bought that I'll be trying as soon as the ice gets a little thicker.
May the fish be with you.

Randy

I have been amassing a collection of Hali Sukkula jigs. I stumbled onto these a couple seasons back and tipped with spikes they are very effective for perch, sunfish and even catfish (catfish was a big surprise, was not targeting them.)
