problem jiffy
« on: Feb 10, 2013, 07:35 AM »
i have a jiffy 9" 2500 stx auger that is 3 years old. First year never had a problem with it, this year everytime i go on the ice it has a hell of a time starting. Have changed out the gas, changed the spark plug, but still giving me problems. Next i will clean out the air filter. It almost seems like it has a problem with the priming, anyone got any clues or have this problem also?

i treat all the ethanol gas I use with enzyme treatment, I also read about putting some sea foam through it. Do you add that to the gas? Never done it before. Any help is awesome  ;D

i think the best way to fix a jiffy is to send it to the scrap yard and use the money u get for scrap steel  as a down payment on a new auger have had no luck with any jiffy ;D

Make sure the bleeder is all the way out on gas cap and hole is clearly open . Carburater cleaner works wonders also.

He's talking about the air vent on the gas cap. Must have something to allow air into the tank as it uses the fuel. Other wise it would create a suction that would suck in the sides of the fuel tank and split it. Jiffy's are very well known for not running in the cold. George in Hinesburg is very good at fixing power augers.

X2 I second that My jiffy was new the first time out the motor housing cracked then the second time the recoil broke then I had problems ever since after 15 years and a lot of money fixing it I finally got a new one this year!

If you do get it running and live anywhere near St. Albans Browns has non Ethanol gas worth the extra money for the fuel! That is what I run in my new 4 stroke Strikemaster!

I have one too. The gas line put on it was to small so uped the line diameter and the throtle sticks. Jiffy sent a new one and had to still tweak with it a bit. Working well now though. Only took half the season getting it right.

Yea I know 1st hand. But my wife gave me one for Xmass in'09. Hate it, but what do you do? If she is'nt looking I take the old never fail 1978 Tass! That said non ethanol gas and 100% synthetic oil help a lot. But beware, if you use the noneth gas for any length of time the fuel system will have a VERY thin film of varnish. Not enough to cause a problem unless you switch back to ethanol, that will remove the film and clog the carb. I remove, disassemble, soak and clean the carb every spring. It works  but its still a finicky, cold blooded, undependable, E P A mandated, tehcumsi S.O.B.  Even the fish mock me when they come out of the hole and see it!

My jiffy is a hard starter too. Everyone makes fun of me bcuz they always have 10 holes drilled by the time I get mine started.  :P

Thats good advice on the diaphragm. Im gonna steal that from this thread and apply it to my issues.  ;D

It had always been tuff to start - now fires up like a charm.

I've had nothing but good luck with my stealth stx.  My other Jiffy was about 25 years old when I finally retired her.  I think it's the guy running it.  Hurry up and get it fixed so you won't keep using all my gas.

the bleeder screw on the gas cap is only there to release pressure build up from the fuel, same as on a gas can..it has nothing to do with the running of the motor...
See how good it runs with it closed......?

Jiffy propane!  Teaching lets go fishing programs I drill a lot of holes.  We got the propane
Models in 2 yrs ago....  Never 1 problem. 2 pull max to start and you dont even need full throttle to drill
a hole!  No gas oil!  Perfect auger if there is such a thing.

I heard jiffy propane doesn't work well on the colder days. Fact or fiction....

I used mine for the first time today on willoughby @12 degrees and worked like a champ.I would think at 20 below you would have to keep an extra bottle stuffed in your coat as the first one may freeze up at the neck ?
