Has anyone ever jigged with rattle traps?
« on: Dec 16, 2006, 01:14 PM »
Has anyone every tried to jig in the winter with the summer vibrating rattle baits such as the rattle trap? How about sinking jerkbaits and such?

I have a lot to try this winter!!!  :-D

I have jigged with rattle baits, {Frenzy Rattlers} and they work pretty good when the fish are aggressive and actively feeding. They are also a good lure to call fish into your area. The fish may not bite the aggressively jigged noisy bait but it might go for a more subtle presentation nearby. :)

I haven't used jerkbait alot during the winter but they also should work well when the fish want a calmer / less aggressive presentation.

For both lure types it would be a good idea to be able to watch how the fish react to you offering. A dark ice shanty or underwater camera would come in handy.

Good luck.

My buddy used them last year on a really pressured lake in a "popular" weed bed. I laughed at him when we started.. and cried when we were done. I was sneaky and natural and he was loud and obnoxious. I could hear his bait 20" away. He crushed the pike. live and learn.

Northland's "Buckshot" rattle spoons are terrific jigs!  Like it says on the box, "it rattles 'em up"!

It will either call every pike on the lake or send them hiding under a brush pile. ;D I have had very good luck jigging with Rattlin Raps. I would say they are a top choice when the pike are very aggressive.

Good point on calling them in Water Wolf. I have used then a few times but I find they have to be worked fairly slow or they catch the line alot. Also if fishing kinda deep they do drop slower than I first thought.

This is my Go To bait for walleyes and pike. One of the best I have in my tackle line up. As it has been said, it works great for bringing in fish too and then using a more versatile jig to catch them. Seen it, taped it, believe in it 100%. Hope they never stop making them.

Wrap some lead thread around the btm hook and it wont foul as much. We use the grip it and rip it most often.

man alive, you guys never stop coming up w/ great stuff! thought i knew it all after all the reading i've done on this site.  makes a guy think, what else in my open water tackle box might work?  an unweighted senko for sluggish eyes?  might take a while to get down, but oh, the action and slow drop!! i'm definitely gonna have to try it!

I have a small Rat'L'Trap in my ice box. I removed the original trebles and put a dropper on the front. Add a minnow head- It does work in certain situations...
As for jerkbaits- The line-tie isn't in a good position for vertical jigging IMO.

I don't understand your question...  ???
With Buckshots I normally just add a minnow head to the treble that comes with them.

The Buckshots I have came with a regular hook, and another hook on a small leadered line. Buckshot dropper spoon is the full name of the jig.  This is what they look like:

been useing the rattle spots foe thre years now. good lures when active like said. i put some of those suspenda strips on thje nose till it hung strait in the water. that helps get it down fast and lets it hang naturall on the pause.

Traps work pretty good for Perch and Burbot too, Tipped with a minnow on the back treble
Some days you jig real aggressive other days just twitch to make the rattles roll around
