Cold Snap Reel Wraps?????
« on: Dec 26, 2012, 07:56 AM »
For the people who have used them......how do they work? Should I stick with Silicon Tape, or will these hold the reel in place just as good? I like the idea, and they do look nicer than tape.

They are great and hold the reel very firmly.

They are great, and they do hold the reel pretty well.  Make sure you use 2 on the front, and 2 on the back.  Oh and just a hint, reel wraps are simply just castration bands, or also the rubber bands you get at most bait shops when they put your bait in the plastic bags.  From the Cold Snap website, it costs 10 dollars for enough bands for 4 rods, while you can order 100 bands for 2.19 on livestock websites.  If you have a local ag and feed place, I bet they carry "reel wraps"  just a tip for you.

Castraition bands for sure.  Also makes it easy to swap your reel if needed.

Imo, nothing works nearly as well as silicone tape.

Yeah but you just gotta wonder when some ice fishing genius, undoubtedly in his cups, says to himself "Gee, there's no way these thing do what they were designed to do" and tries one on for size.  You just know it's going to happen sooner or later.  ;-)

I like the Reel Wraps easy to change reels if needed and holds the reel nice and tight, also gives a sleeker look over the tape and doesnt tear up cork like tape or leave a sticky film....

Try a small piece of rubber contact paper that's used in utility drawers. Wrap around rod, seat reel then used electrical tape. No slipping and wont leave sticky residue on rod handle.

I use self adhesive silicone electrical tape too. Holds my reels well and leaves no residue when removed. As far as looks go, it looks "functional".

I just picked up these reel grips from cabela's for 3.50, meant for crank knobs. It was a pain getting them on but they hold very tight. Will get to test it out in a few days. There might be too much grip there though, maybe ill get used to it, time will tell.

Electrical tape works great for me. I always have a roll or two around.

I had a no s#!t moment a while back. I was watching an ice fishing show. They were going to have a segment on taping a reel to a rod. I thought what could they possibly teach me about that. The guy cut the tape into strips rather than rapping right off the roll. I couldn't believe how easy that makes it and how dumb I felt.

I do not worry about residue. If I am retaping or changing a reel then the new tape will cover anything left on there.

I haven't found anything that felt as secure as tape.

I notice in a lot of the posts the bands are described as holding the reel "pretty tight" or some such. I do not want them loose at all. Tape holds them rock solid.

I wish manufacturers would quit putting on those thick plastic or metal bands. I am just going to dremel them off.

The Eagle Claw inline ice reel, ordered it as a combo and put it on a northland trickstick. I have yet to use it but am excited to test it out monday at Devils Lake.
