Anise extract?
« on: Jan 29, 2010, 11:13 AM »
I was told by a family friend that he swears by putting anise extract on his bait. Not sure if this is legal or not. Was wondering if anyone had tried it and if it helped.

Not illegal though? He seemed to hint that I wouldn't want to get caught with it.

Have no idea why it might be illegal. I have lived in two reigons that have heavy Amish populations, one in Indiana and now here in Ohio. Both there and here I have seen Amish put anise on bait. Very common old "trick" that they use and claim good success. I tried it one time while perch fishing but could not stand the stink of the anise, once it got on my hands it just about ruined my day. Had to drink a whole lot of extra beer just to make it go away. ;)

It smells like black licourice, so maybe you bait bears with it.

Would be awesome to see Amish ice fishing. Using it as a cover scent on your hands wouldn't be such a bad idea...stinks enough to work thats for sure.

Can't believe you actually found a picture of it. I've seen Amsih fishing before, but only in the summer. Amazing.

I see quite a few of them ice fishing here in PA. Most of them can't seem to comprehend size or bag limits.

People up in NY near Lake Ontario have used Anise Extract in their egg cures since I can remember.

anise is a plant, stinks like liqourice. My bud gave me a little bottle, as someone else mentioned its awsome for carp. bass love it too i hear. As for where to find it, hmmm try www.carpanglersgroup.c om and check with the bait suppliers on there, someone will carry it i'm sure.   I've never checked for it but maybe in a health food store?? i think humans can consume it too, i'd try health stores first then hit online carp bait co's..

Not sure if they have to follow these laws. Here in Michigan I don't think hunting regulations apply to them. I think it has something to do with the way they live. Could be wrong though, maybe they do just ignore them.

Not exactly sure what it is from (anise plant i suppose  ;D) but it smells like concentrated black licourice. I got mine from walmart in the baking/spice isle near the vanilla.

Its a flavoring used to make candy and stuff, you can find it in most grocery stores. It will be in the seasoning and flavoring section and food dyes. Runs about $4.00 around here. I use it for bear hunting but have never thaught to use it for fishing, might try it.

How do you apply it to the fish. Do you just pour a little on or pour some on a rag and wipe it on the fish?
