Tip Up Line?
« on: Nov 11, 2010, 05:38 PM »
Can someone recommend a good tip up line to use?  Not the leader, but the line for the spool.  I stopped by GM on the way home and they had Suffix and it was the plastic feeling stuff.  Didn't feel very good, but it could be good stuff I just don't know?

Thanks,

Steuben1

Mason and Cortland tipup line is good stuff. The new Suffic braided tipup line with varied colors every 5 foot looks promising, I want to pick up a couple spools to try that out. Stay away from HT tipup line its all junk, I've had it.

I've just always used the basic Dacron tip up line and never had any complaints.

I've always had good luck with Masons 20lb.

I've used many kinds over the years and settled actually got some 35lb dacron trolling line a few years back and love it.  Handles well when frozen on the ice after landing a fish....doesn't kink up too bad at all.  zero stretch so I use a long leader of mono or floro depending on what I'm fishing for to give a little stretch.  I'll stick with dacron as far as I'm concerned.

Just spool mono the whole way

I tried that my first season ice fishing before I talked with guys out there and got some tips.  The mono hurt like crazy on my hands pulling in fish and also kinked up on the spool and fouled everything up.

Ive always used standard dacron lines by mason 20-30lb.  Keep it simple.

I use 30lb Dacron kite line.  1,000 feet for 25$, much cheaper than buying actual tip up line.

i use 45lb. dacron but make sure its heat treated.seals it from absorbing as much water. used untreated dacron and is as bad as using the nylon. you spend half the day untangling line when the lakers turn on.

I use vinyl coated tip up line and I really like it. Never had a reason to try anything else. It doesn't freeze up and get stiff like uncoated braided and it lasts forever.

Mason 30lb dacron with a Spro heavy swivel and a fluoro leader of varying weights, depending on what species I am after

I have always used a heavy enough mono depending on what your fishing for and how deep the water is and has always worked great for me, as far as ripping through my hands I have never had a problem.

You can get large spools of dacron fly line backing at good pricing. the bright color can have it's advantages. I'll use a 2 to 4 foot leader of floro and never had issues.

On a side note how long does everyone use the same Dacron for? 1 season 2 seasons...forever?

I had mine on for 22 years. When I replaced it, the line seemed as strong as it was when I first spooled it.
