tip up hooks / transport
« on: Feb 07, 2010, 08:42 AM »
Just wondered what most people do with their tip ups at the end of the
day to take them home. Mostly what do you do with the hook or
quick strike hooks. Do you leave them on and how do you store them for transport
any special rigs or tricks. to keep the hooks. or do you take the hooks off.

I epoxied a small cork on the bottom side of my tip ups to secure the hook into for transport.

On a beaver dam I just hook the hook on the brass line loop and tighten it up. Stays put for me.

on a 3 legged t/u I tape a hunk of cork on top of vertical leg. fold up t/u, wind line onto spool until hook can be pulled tight and placed in cork. may have to wrap line around length of folded t/u to keep leader tight. no memory worries, leader stays straight, and hook is sharp and out of the way.

I drilled a 1/2" hole in the edge of my beaver dam, then took a plug cutter to a wine cork. I then plugged the hole with the cork. Now i can stick the hook in the cork.

Rubber bands.  I tie a knot in the upper 1/3 so it looks like a figure 8, hook the hook thru the small loop, pull taught, then loop the other end around the spool.  I store the rubber band on one of the arms of the tip-up so I dont loose them.  Quick and easy.

Home depot has what they call velcro ties.  they're like zip ties but with the concept of velcro...  for electronic wires.  best thing is they come in packs of 5 multi color.  got a little hole at the end that I hook the hook on and then i wrap the velro around the spool.  works like a charm.... like 2 bucks for a 5 pack.

I use the same thing for my polars, just hook your treble through the slit in the strap and wind it tight

I use these too.  However, I did not know they made such wide rubber bands.  IF I find some of those, I may switch as the velcro tends to "latch" onto anything it can.

I started using the velcro wraps last year and I love them.  I use them all over, vex, tipups and tip downs, rods, and for rope lights in the hut.

Screw a stainless extension spring to the flag end, and hook into that. This allows you to keep tension on the line during transport.

Same use here. Home Depot 5.99 for 2 25 packs.

I made velco wraps.  Just a piece of velcro about 4 inches long.  Wrap it around the spool.  Works for me.

I got a 10 pack of the velcro wraps a couple years ago at wallmart. They work great. I used to borrow the knotless bungees that my daughter would wear in her hair, but the velcro has those beat by a long shot. Protects every thing from getting hooked too.

i put a split ring on a rubberband, then tie it to the flag spring... wind the line up all the way and then put the hook in the split ring. tighten it up and it works pretty good

I cut 2 pieces of packing foam about 1/4 inch thick and 2 inches square and duct tape them on top and bottom of artic on the end that the reel folds into. Then hook right thru the duct tape into the foam. On frabil type I just put a couple of wraps of duct tape around the tip up and just hook thru the tape.
