Or he's using reverse psychology.  Get everyone to move down there so he's got a place to setup between barage marina and squaw beach!  LoL

Maybe the nets set for the herring are catching more then i thought they were, i know of two herring nets set, guy said he was getting a few in his nets but not like last year, so maybe the herring are just a little slow yet, and before anyone starts bashing the natives about nets, I am a native, just dont use nets, its to damn much work, I just wish the tribe would make the southern boundary for nets past pequaming like it once was!

Why is it that it is mostly the same few people actually posting on here?  And then when newbies post they get slammed by the regulars.

HEY LOVESMELT, have you caught any walleye off irenes? Last two summers i hit the occasional walleye there, right off the big weed bed , in about 15-20 ft of water, caught one real nice one, 8.5 lbs., never knew walleyes were around their, until i seen the assessment nets pulled by the tribe, wholly molly some big fish down there!

Don't know who your talking about as far as regulars and Indians.    Im actually a card carrying tribal member.....but at the same time im a sports fisherman so I don't use any of my tribal rights.   Ill leave it at that instead of going into why I don't think I should have anymore rights then all my white neighbors.

How is the ice holding up with the gale force winds and mild weather? I'm going nuts right now because I havn't had a chance to fish in almost two weeks. I'm supposed to get next Friday off and K-Bay is on the hit list!

As of this evening the ice ends by assininns, busted up towards squaw beach, not sure how it is on lanse side towards whirligig, i just heard this morning ice went out north of their, but from squaw beach in to bay ice is still good, just slushy here and there!

Black and/or rotten ice is so obviously dangerous, yet some are weighing the risks (on a different scale than what I use apparently) and proceeding......likely the same folks who said last year their shacks were just fine, as they drifted >7miles north and into Peq Bay........BE CAREFUL!  Anything north of Sand Point at this point is risky and not worth trying unless you are single with no kids at home.

Went to Jentofts today but didn't have the guts to go on the ice there. The ice was creaking, there was water coming up out of cracks near shore as the waves moved in and out. There were a number of people out from there and from Whil-I-Gig as well but it spooked me. A couple of guys from Marquette were coming off the ice as my wife and I were looking at the lake. They said that they only stayed out for about half an hour because the conditions made them nervous. We drove back to the pumphouse and went out .68 mi. to 150 foot of water. No bites at all between my wife and I and 2 other guys who were there.

slush and float ice is trying to set up again on the outer fringe of the ice that withstood that wind event, but MAN be careful......more winds and waves predicted, plus milder weather creeping in again mid-week (although not nearly as warm as last week)......just do not end up the headline in the local papers!

Your likely safe.....BUT the current that rips that shoreline can really erode the ice from underneath, and when E/ NE winds, a bit of sun and warmth, and waves start beating on it as well, things can get a bit iffy!  Tread Lightly!

Ice is even gone at the mouth of the falls, shacks that were there, squaw, and light house are either sank or floaters. :'( Hopefully guys can save their shacks if they float into pequaming bay as they are floating that way as we speak.

Chase, are you saying that all the ice in Keweenaw Bay is broken up or gone? Or is it just open for a ways off the mouth of the Falls River? Did you get your shack off the ice in time?

23 is what might be floating, but thats just whats left.  At first dawn there were >65 tents, portables and large shacks at the mercy of mother nature.  By afternoon many of the heavy shacks were GONE.......either new fish structure or pieces in the ice chunk soup......That wind even from last week and the associated major seiche effects came back bigtime the last couple of days, and Lake Superior is not settled down yet either.  The Baraga perch/ smelt village people better be thinking hard about getting their stuff out of harms way as well.  If south winds blow the float stuff out and leave the lower bay half water, BEWARE!!!

I also saw open water at the mouth of the falls, north. I recognized some of the shacks that were at the mouth of the falls, and I saw those floating in the middle of the bay. And yes, my shack is one of the many shacks out there floating. I did not see it coming and struck me by complete surprise. I am not a veteran of the big lake in anyway. I've only been fishing it for about 3 years. This is my second year with a permanent and now i'm hoping to recover what mother nature took from me.

sunday morning i told people fishing off squaw beach to remove shacks, i was fishing north of squaw beach and the pressure crack that ran west to east was moving back and forth, one hour it would be a foot wide the next it would be 6 inches, the ice north of their was not locked in, plus guys were reporting waves under ice, that the ice was moving 1-2 ft. up and down, but because their was 15 inches of ice , the ice was good, well in my 20 + yrs. of ice fishing this lake i seen it break as much as 36 inches of ice in a matter of few hours, all it takes is the right waves, and right wind, and youd be surprised what that lake can do, nows theirs rumors down here, i say rumors cause i dont know if true yet, that coast guard is going to rescue shacks and charge owners for retrival.

The wooden shacks aren't the disturbing part.....its all the heaters...garbage....p ropane tanks and other stuff that's gonna be all over the bottom of the bay that sucks!       Me personally I think the dnr should make permanent shacks on the great lakes illegal.    The big lake is to unpredictable to take chances of destroying it!     I understand that crap happens and nobody wanted to lose there stuff or pollute the lake...but you can't even have a permanent deer blind on state land.     Time to invest in portable shacks!

I fished off baraga marina today,  2lb. coho, 4 lb. lake trout, 6.5 lb steelhead, and lost a real nice coho rite below ice, I had a great day! I talked to a guy fishing whitefish, he had 3 today, has caught 13 in last 3 trips out! be careful on ice, the ice has a frozen over channel from lighthouse to falls river, float ice is only froze together with 1/2 inch of ice! Dont follow the snowmachines across the ice, it is not safe, i hate to say it but i bet by the weekend someone is going thru ice in bay!

HA, i didnt say i caught monsters, ive caught way bigger steelies in bay than that, 2 lb. coho is actually small, but i wasnt close to anyone, and i was shallower than 50 ft. maybe if u fish this bay for 20 plus years maybe  u too can catch fish, u should know its all in what u use and what the fish want on that day, weather plays a big role too, ive only been skunked 1 time this year, been out over 30 times, if i told everyone where i caught fish, id have a village by me tomorrow, and if u want pics of my fish, ill see if i can get it on here, i do have one of the steelhead. and one more thing, those people wouldnt be fishing by the perch shacks would they, if they caught a fish that would surprise me!

Since im posting pics, this one is from a few weeks ago somewhere near lighthouse,we could see it, me and 4 other people caught these, 15 coho, and 35 herring, but i bet the fishing was no good then, again we were by ourselfs, not close to anyone, left no sign of fish caught, the herring just happened to be moving by good, and we know what works!

Your not the only ones who know what works, Shane.......Seems you are very well known around Baraga and L'Anse.  Nice catches.....

Because im just letting people know the fish are around, u just have to catch them! If i wanted to brag i would post all of my fishing pics on here but i dont, and i dont have a spot, if someone is fishing were i wanted to, thats fine, i just find the depth im looking for elsewhere, its a huge lake, many good reefs, and holes, plus i usually plan to fish 2-3 different locations anyway.

Your right .....this is a place to post reports and a picture is a report.    Its pretty hard to type sarcasm.........I get bored sometimes and like to give people a hard time.  No punt intended!   Im known to post pictures of fish on another site.......I was calling the kettle black.       I like to post a picture to make a guy go crazy wanting to fish rather then rub it in there face.    Sometimes rubbing it in a little ain't so bad.

Man where have you been?  Lots of people went out, then went home, then came back to their gear being long-gone!  People still goin gout south of Sand Point along the Baraga shore, but anywhere else is risky at best!  Also there is a new hobby starting up along the Point Abbaye area.....shack shrapnel hunting!  Seriously……..people are finding stuff in ice pack along the shores now.  Heck, as of last eve some shacks were way way WAY out in the middle of the Bay, still clinging to float ice!  Your better off fishing Portage!

I hear you can still fish at Baraga Marina or the willow. Try fishing out by fishslayer and you might get some. Everyone else I talked to haven't been catching, except for smelt at night.

Garshouse,
Luckily I went home that day, but took all my gear and portable shanty with me, I heard the disaster stroke minutes after that, I had a first timer with me who felt cold even with the heater being on all time. I drove by the bay yesterday and it doesnt look good, thin ice with chunks of old ice floating all over. counted total of 12 shanty still floating.

I fry them, deepfry them, and bake them, the lake herring are a real good eating fish, surprises me more people dont fish for them, and i also smoke them. I also give some of my fish fish to a few elders of the tribe that enjoy eating fish but can no longer fish, try to get a few every week or so for them.

My wife went to Marquette yesterday and said she saw shelters out from Assinins. Are people fishing out there again or are they the remaining ones that floated out from further in last week?

Stranded shacks.  There are still a few out there in need of rescue.   However people are taking portables out here and thereas well.  BUT you have to be careful, as the ice can be 4 inches in one spot, then suddenyl 1/2" as you get into areas with old and new ice mixed.  It would have been better if all that busted up crap would have just blew out and things would have reset from scratch.

Ice has set up for the most part in the lower bay again.  Even people carefully going on ice near the lighthouse.  BUT BE CAREFUL!!!  Still reports of dangerous ice, especially Sand Point North.  The drop off near shore will easily claim you if you make a foolish move.  Bring a spud and a buddy!

So lovesmelt, was that you off Irene's Pizza today? Did you get anything? Fishing was terrible for me the last two days. The fish seemed to have disappeared.

Yeah it is sort of funny that after the ice broke up and a bunch of people lost stuff, the spots in the lower bay suddenly became popular!  Seems some knew Pizza Flats was a producer all along LOL!

I heard the shoreline ice is deteriorating in spots. I fished off the Pumphouse yesterday but had a jump a 3 ft gap. Be careful guys.
