I caught a fish
« on: Mar 01, 2023, 02:21 PM »
I don't contribute enough here. Last weekend I fished instead of rode the sled. And I caught a fish. So in an effort to be a more contributing member of the site and less of a slug, here is a picture of my fish...

45 feet of water, tip up sucker on the bottom.

Quote- fishslap: I use a variety:  whistlin' bungholes, spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker don'ts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistlin' kitty chaser

Very nice! I need to step up my tip up sucker game. Don’t seem to have much luck on them.I know it’s typically a wait for “the right one” many times, but I just question myself on it all the time. Haven’t built confidence yet

Nice laker! I find myself using large smelt over suckers but never gave suckers much of a chance.  this weekend I’m going to give it a shot. I get most of my lakers on a rod. Very rarely will a trap out fish a rod and reel for me.

17#er for me ate a mega sucker on a JJ while I was jigging the hell out of them.

Damn 17 #! on a JJ huh? I rarely use JJ with live bait because I always thought it would go off even on the slightest bump. So it wouldn’t give them enough time to eat it and also didn’t think it would have enough backbone to set the hook on em. I’ve only used live bait a handful of times on JJ. What size rod do you run on them? I use mine mostly with a medium light/medium rod with eggs and worms  for rainbows. Doesn’t give them an opportunity to drop the bait when they sense the hook. When I use eggs I go big and use 1 to cover the knot and the other one to cover the hook I leave  the very tip of the hook exposed.

Great fish - well done....

What's the typical size of tip-up suckers - 6 inches or so? (serious question... though run with it if you must).

And I don't think anyone would call you a slug on this sight...

Yeah, they didn't have smelt or I would have gone that way. I was jigging in the house with the tip up outside and low and behold he found the tip up first. Like you I usually catch lakers with the camera and a jig stick.

They were probably 4" or so? (I'm gonna leave the rest of this comment alone)

That's what I thought! A fish!

Nice fish!  When I was targeting Lakers I had some good success with tip up suckers on Newfound.  I used to use the ones around 4-5 inches.  I found they stayed alive much better than smelt and I got better numbers.

Or maybe I caught more because I was finally in the right spots and primarily using suckers?
