Best GPS maps
« on: Oct 08, 2009, 05:54 AM »
I have no GPS unit and am planning on purchasing one.
I would like to first find out the best GPS maps of Montana
lakes, this way I can find a unit that is compatable.

Lakemaster has great maps, but they have a slim list of
lakes in Montana.  Garmins inland lake maps have an
extensive listing found here
http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/inland/Inland_Lakes_List.pdf
but I have no experience with their products.  Then there's
Navionics, another I have no experience with.  They have
a decent listing here
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/home/pages/np_reg01.html
but no Tiber, and not even a shoreline of Fort Peck.
Which makes me think Garmins maybe the best choice for
MT.  Input?

I use a Garmin 530Hcx for hunting that i purchased this fall. have not used any of the lake maps yet, but their terrain maps are incredible. I was very impressed with the software.

I'm leaning towards a Garmin with a Navionics chip.  I am not entirely impressed with the lakes listing but from what I've read inland lakes is pretty much useless.

Garmin inland lakes chip sucks. If you cant get the lakes you want on Lakemaster Garmin, go with a Lowrance unit and buy a Navionics chip. We are set with some of the best maps on Earth for lakes in the upper midwest from Lakemaster, but there coverage outside this area is pretty poor. You cant get a Navionics chip for a Garmin, so it is better to buy a Lowrance.
