That is one fat fish.  Is it a hybrid?
Fisherman's Prayer
I pray that I may live to fish
          Until my dying day.
And when it comes to my last cast,
       I then most humbly pray:
When in the Lord's great landing net
           And peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be Judged
              BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.

Sparkplg,  Got these from a pond that a buddy has permission to fish.  These fish were caught on Jiggin raps.  They are very healthy and THICK.  I would love to have this strain of gill in my pond.  Can you tell anything about the gills from the pics?  The knife in the picture is a Cutco 11 1/4" long.

Here's one that came from one of our lakes in K-county:

Those are some great looking gills'. Indiana is too far north to have any of the southern strains, or coppernose Bluegills, so chances are those are northern, or native fish. There are a couple folks selectively breeding Northern strain Bluegills for optimum size, but they are scarce, and not readily available to the general public.

I would say that those fish came from a BOW where the food supply is plentiful, and whatever harvest strategies are practiced there regarding Bluegills, and just as important, Bass, are working together to produce these excellent fish. That's not to say that genetics doesn't play a role in creating a big Bluegill, because it can. But in my opinion, having an adequate food supply is more important than a good pedigree. Are those fish fed supplemental, or artificial feed? If not, the BOW that they came from is a pretty special place.

Your bottom photo looks to be a cross between a Redear and a Bluegill. A naturally occurring hybrid. Nice fish also!

abishop, I'll bring downriggers with bear traps on them if you bring planer boards and a crate of 2ft. worms.

To my knowledge there is no special harvest strategies in place and I'm not sure how much fishing pressure it gets.  They may do some supplemental feeding.   All species of fish in the pond seem very healthy.  It is a true joy to fish this pond because of the huge bluegills!

Beautiful Gills,my favorite fish. On a down note a caught two 16-17 inches yesterday but a 75 lb snapping turtle came out of the mud and ate stringer and all before I could get a picture. lol  I'm 59 and ice, open water fished all my life and still looking for and 11 inch fish,I caught several 10-10 1/4 inches through the years but here in Pa. they take a long time and far and few get to10 inches.

I'm starting to wonder if this thread is one of those "How do you keep an idiot in suspense" jokes..... If it is, it is working for me anyway.

I'm curios where this ranks as far as views/comment quantity for Indiana board posts. 7 pages of comments and over 3000 views seems pretty high for a little Indiana board.

i can only speculate.... but i would have to assume that due to the harsh winter and thick ice the pits have experienced some serious winter kill due to the disolved oxygen levels getteing to low...
largest of the species are usually killed  first...place is probly just left with a ton of stunted 9" inchers!!

and after this much build up i would hate to laugh at a 12" gill if even one of those were to posted.....

so we wait!!

I've had gills suck down crawlers hooked once and hanging straight down about a foot below the hook all you here is a pop and it is inhaled

This is what a mainly use to catch gills, just a crawler threaded on the hook past the collar, nothing else. A 6 inch bluegill can suck the whole crawler in and get hooked deep. Happens a lot.

This isn't huge but this size is common by my house.

My neighbor has pictures of a couple 12 inch gills he caught a couple years before I moved here. I will see if he will let me scan them so I can post, but it may be a while as he is retired and gone a lot.
