Title: First Ice 2014
Post by: Ski Hunter on Nov 21, 2014, 12:15 PM
I must be getting old...waited for over 3" of ice this year before I made it out (more like doubles kept me from checking it Wednesday  ;) )

Anyway, made the first actual trip out this morning on somewhere between 3 and 4" of clear black ice. Only had about an hour or so as I had to take care of a few things to get ready to head offshore in search of pelagics this weekend before heading to work tonight  ;D

Yeah, I didn't want to bring my gas auger so I used a hammer, haha.  Only 3" thick, not too hard to chop through.

Mike, you aint getting old, you're getting fat, welcome to the club

After a phone call at 1024p notifying me that someone in PA is standing on the ice, I decided to leave work early, get stuck in traffic, and absolutely freeze my fingers off in 28 degree temps in hopes of something actually hitting a nightcrawler under a tip up and jigged.

Hey wait, mine are the first tip ups on the ice, pretty cool

Now the race is on to first fish on the ice

well then let me come in a filthy third in the race onto ice.

this is Leisure Lake halfway up the Plateau, fishing the mid main body of the lake in 4 feet of water.  This means there has to be safe ice on top of the Plateau.  And if you don't get out this weekend, who knows how long you'll have to wait.

My itch is scratched.

I'll be at the Pickeral inn tomorrow morning at 7 and will get off the dam on Leisure tomorrow.

Mike, I'll be at the Susquy by you tomorrow afternoon hunting walleye since we can't get to Buffalo to hunt browns.

Welcome to new ice season - November 21, 2014, what an early start.

Van Cleaver, MarkD, Arkansaspete, call you boys tomorrow with the report.

Dr. JM

I dropped my first jigs down yesterday in nwpa,  1-1.5" of clear ice.......... The kids and I took a walk down to the lake and seen bluegills and bass in a few feet of water, they came right up to us and were staring at us through the ice.  Really cool, so we ran home to get the rods.  I poked a few holes using a ski pole and started my ice fishing season for 2014-15.......  My season came to an abrupt hault when the ice gave way and I was in the drink.  The water was only a few feet deep and the kids and I had a good laugh, as I gave a lesson on ice safety. Do as I say not as I do sorta thing, lol. Nice to get out and have some fun on the ice anyway.
