Trading lakers for pike.
« on: Feb 12, 2018, 06:09 PM »
Needed a break from jigging lakers and hit the big lake to do some ice camping and pike hunting.  Saturday's set was deep...too deep and my thought of targeting large fish ouside of the shallows was squashed with a skunk for the pike.  Had traps setup for walleye but no dice.  Tried to get some action jigging Sat evening with only perch to keep me company.  20 something degrees and snow made sleeping a bit cold but managable.  Sunday we packed up camp and took a long ride on the ice to a spot I caught fish at in October.  Ended up with a dozen pike, only one worth of a pic but fun none the less.  I saw lots of prime water being ignored, water that had weedbeds in October so I'll probably go back this weekend to exploit them!

The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad.

Sadly, the spot where you got your eye is dead.  There hasn't been  a good weed bed there to hold fish in the past few seasons.

Looks/sounds like some hard core conditions.

The pike in that next to last photo is a beauty, though.

Thanks guys.  No I slept on a cot in my shanty in a zero degree bag...still froze but got it done.  Should have put the cot in the truck and idled all night.  Little pain is good for the body though.

I got a nice Slumberjack 20 below bag for sale. Only used a few times. Kept me warm on the side of Mt. Washington at -25 $75

Nice.  I think the next time I go I am sleeping in the truck or when the lows are more tolerable.

Beautiful pike.  Very nice.  Is Champlain like that all over where you can just drive up and down the lake?  Looked like an episode of ice road truckers! Lol.
Nice adventure!  Thanks for sharing.

Nice work Jon

Tell me when and Ill show you Matt.  I might do a suicide run Monday.   Takes about 23 hours to do it in a day with the driving (about 9 hours of it!)

Whitetail...definetly not all over the lake.  There are spots where you can drive liberally but you have to watch out for weak spots like you would walking just on a different scale.

We drove from 78 to the canadian border...my plan was to turn left into missquoi bay but it would have required driving through a bunch of sets or over the border.  I didn't want to do either so we picked a random flat and let it rip.
