We will get that drill a work out Will!

Just to throw it out there, if any folks would like to come but are worried about making holes, there will be several power augers out there and any one will be willing to help you out so just ask!

Headed over to the cove in between my next two jobs, will report back.

Made a quick stop at the cove between jobs.  The trail in was packed by several sleds and I am some more will make the trek before Sat.  I walked right on without issue just a little slushy right there at the get on where the water fluctuates and the ice shifts but once I was on 20 feet it dried up and there was no slush under the ice.  There was about 6-8 inch average of snow cover with wind blown bare spots and deeper drifts.  Not the easiest walking but I am certain it is better than places out east that got a couple of feet out of the blizzard.  We only got 7 inches but we did get a foot out of that last one.  I did not have means to chop a hole and no one was out there at the time so I did not have a chance to check ice thickness but I will stick with my earlier 12-14 inch prediction.

Looking forward to Sat.!

Remember Please come in at 11:30 on the whistle for a real quick meet and photo

I was out there Tuesday and I'd guess there was 12" of ice under all the snow and crust. We had snow shoes so had no problems but in boots it would've been pretty unpleasant.   … we were breaking trail though, maybe by now its packed down enough to be fine.

I canceled it for this year Will.  Things were up in the air and it was one less thing for me to deal with.  I am going to reinstate it for next year.

I really would like to have every one come in at 11:30 for a photo and just for every one to meet for a couple of minutes.

The thing is that it is sugar snow so not all that hard to walk through.  I don't think I'll bother with my shoes.  Might throw them in for giggles but certainly don't "need" them.

Weather is holding.  Not beautiful but mid 20's and so far they are calling for Calm to 5 mph winds and that is key on the cove.

Woohoo! I will be able to make it out there tomorrow! It is a decent drive for me so I will be later than most folks there I guess. Capt.shay: where should I try and find you guys. When do you plan to be there?

Also, can I park here?

Excited for tomorrow and meet up folks from the pre-ice gathering!

Glad you can make it Ash.  You do not want to park where you have marked.  The gates are closed there in the winter.  You want the left hand turn just before there.  It will take you out to the actual camp ground and parking area.  Since the wind isn't looking to bad, I will set up right on the main point as yo enter the ice.  Most of the folks out there will be part of Ice Shanty.

It is looking like my bud has to work tonight so I may be a little late (7-7:30) getting out there.

BTW-  I just had a random thought, I hope SPANKY gets the word about our gathering.  I think he use to hear about it from his bait shop so if any one knows who I am talking about, please pass the info on to him.

Drove out there this morning with nbBrian and set up just to the left in the cove by the rock cliffs. We were set up in 6 to 15 feet of water and didn't get a flag all day. Tried jigging but I guess we were set up in the dead sea. Only saw a few flags all day. Enjoyed the ride out there and seeing some old faces and some new. Going fishing tomorrow at a local pond that we checked out on the way home.

Great time as usual. Great to see everybody and meet some new faces. Weather was pretty good little to no wind. A plus for the Cove. Did have a few snow squalls. And yes the gathering tradition or streak what ever you want to call it continues with an iced Pike

Thanks John for putting this together every year.

Unfortunately, I only got to chat briefly
With a couple groups of guys on my way out...
I guess showing up at 6:50 was "late". I trudged all
the way out to the left past everybody.

I only managed 2 slime darts in 4 hours,
but as always a day outside beat a day
on the couch.

By any chance did somebody find a Marmish
palm rod by the entrance (near the information
sign in parking lot)? I can't find the darn thing
anywhere...

Thank you all for making my first shanty trip a positive one.  Special thanks to Capt. Shay for this event and drilled the holes for us.  I had fun chatting with some of the great characters.  Can't wait for the next gathering! :)

Thanks to one and all for another great gathering.  The fishing could have been better but we did continue our streak of at least one pike landed every gathering.  Unfortunately, that was all that stingy old cove would give up this year.  It is great to see so many of you guys, some of whom I only see once a year.   Thanks again for making it a great gathering.

Save the date Feb. 6, 2016 for the Tenth Anniversary Gathering.  I hope every one will make a special effort next year to make it to the Cove

I know we are missing a few folks but this was most of "The Crew"

That's what I've been waiting for, the "money shot" of the group us us. Conditions were a little sloppy which made for a hard trek. 8" of power on top of 4" of slushy water then 12" of ice.Of course it could have been worse. I got the skunk but it was nice to see others including newbies catch some fish. You could feel their excitement and we shared some tips and advice with them. Shared some food and laughs and swapped fish stories. Great to see the guys I've met before and some others who were new to me or the site. Thanks go out to the Capt for hosting.

Another great get together!  Lots of faces; regulars and newcomers.

My day started with a 20" pickerel as I set my second tip up with 5" shiners Tom's bait.  I hadn't even backed away from it when the flag popped.  Later in the morning got another pickerel - just shy of 16".  The day was actually pretty good (as Barton's Cove goes) for numbers of flags.

The big count for the day had to go to folks stepping in old snow covered holes and getting wet feet.  I counted four not-so-lucky guys, including some that managed to go knee deep in a 6-inch hole.  It is hard to see the holes when they are covered by several inches of slush and snow.

Could not have asked for better fishing weather - low/no winds, a little snow, and mild temps.

Let's hope next year's 10th gathering will be even better!

Thanks to capt.shay for keeping the tradition going.   ;D
