to be honest Ive done a few conventional things aka small smelt and Ive peppered the hole with salmon eggs, but if i were you as far as colors ask the locals I personally use yellow but have heard red was workin this year locally

but a tip up flag with a large mouth bass will be the death of me

The color really doesn,t matter  orange charteuse rainbow all good  But presentation does matter  heres a little trick that has worked for me over the years   use  4 lb floro seagar about 3 feet attach one end to tipup line with small black barrel swivel  attach a teardrop jig in the sme color of the power bait your going to use,  on the business end of the deal. Then mold the power bait around the teardrop jig just enough to cover the jig.  not too big just a little snack, then lower the booby trapped jig down the hole in 2-6 feet of water 6 inches above a sandy or gravelly bottom. The trout dont see any weights and the power bait just floats there SOO ENTICING  Good luck this weekend  ps chum the hole with atlas big boys it wont hurt one bit  Pete

Worms!!!
Meal worms, wax worms, night crawlers. You can still get them at most bait shops. I use them with a small Swedish Pimple. Also catch trout on small minnows.

I was going to say mealies.  That's what I've caught all the trout I've caught jigging on.  Hooked twice onto the treble of a swedish pimple so it sits horizontal.  Most of them took it while the jig was sitting still, so I'd guess it would work on a tip up too.

If you can't find worms at the bait shop, try PetCo. or a pet shop that sells lizards, etc. I got 50 big wax worms for $3.00 and two dozen "superworms" (huge) for $1.99.

I caught a salmon that would have won the spring tournament so I was told. Too bad salmon are illegal!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Other than that 4 salmon and 1 laker. Better than being skunked like I have in the past two years.
