Title: Sandy pond ice..
Post by: captain guy on Dec 26, 2007, 06:35 PM
Would anyone happen to know the condition of the ice at Sandy? is the Wig Wam still a  good place to park? ( haven't fished there in a good 30 yrs. so i figure some current info. would be a good thing).
Also, is there okay parking at the Greene point area ? i seem to remember that spot also as being where we used to fish.
Thank you in advance from a former "lurker" who is now a "member".......

I fished at the wigwam wed,and thurs.about 5 inches.Half crap ice half black with some slush under the ice.Never seen that before ???.Got into some perch mostly dinks and 1 pike I couldn't get thru a 5" auger hole.

The "Elms" is a golf course north on RT 3.You'll have to take a left off RT3 to go past their "Club House" there is a small area that anglers can park there. Its been free to access the pond there for years. So far soo good on no one trashing the area.By all means if that small lot is full of vehicle DO NOT park long side of the road!!!

Not sure about Greene Point but I heard they are doing well with gills and crappie near the elms. You'll have to pay $5 to park @ the wigwam or greene point.

Finally looks like next week to really lock up some better ice conditions, and there is no snow on the ice wear spikes or creepers to walk around.I'll be back out next wednesday and thursday on my days off.

Good luck and be safe

I was on it yesterday, had a hard time getting off @ the wig. We did lose a ton of ice. Were down to no more then 4 inches mostly all white ice. The shore line lost a foot and we all ended up with a wet foot trying to get onto shore. It will be a few days before I go back on sandy.

Went by the Elms this morning + the spot was pretty sketchy and I saw some open water as well. We left as there was nobody else about, and things looked a little sketchy. Went to big bay instead, 4 inches white ice with slush underneath, but only 1 bluegill.

Things were really good on the pond, has anyone else seen perch this big before there? We always caught mostly dinks, maybe when they opened the channel up more fish came in?

went out of the elms around 10:00am til 1:00pm...2 other guys out also...could get out of one spot only from what I could see...right on the end of a rock point..had to jump a ft. or so to get on...4-5" once you get on though...lots of pretty small perch...gave a few keepers to a young fella who was fishing near me...one other guy had quite few decent ones but had to pick thru dinks...saw a couple of shanties out of the wig wam area...not many guys out

We fished off the elms yesterday, MEASURED ice was 4 1/2", half black, half white. Caught some decent Pike on the tip-ups, and some good perch jigging. When we stopped using spikes and jigged with fatheads only, it seemed to weed out the smaller ones. Looking all over the Pond we saw 20-30 fisherman.

Post by: percheyes42 on Jan 02, 2008, 07:11 AM
Hey Tiger. We were the 2 people right in the middle of the pond. I MEASURED the ice as well. With it having 6". About 4-5" white ice. The ice is a little thinner over there by the Elms for 2 reasons. 1, it is deeper water over there and 2, it is closer to the lake. Not trying to start anything, just letting people know that the ice varies. I think that if you were to go to Greene Point, there would be even less ice there. Good luck and stay on top.

I was on Sandy Yesterday most of the day. The ramp side of the wigwam is passable...a little soft yesterday but passable. We walked across it no problem. With last nights temps and the outlook for tonight, it should tigten up even more. The fishing was great too. Awesome way to start the new year!  ;D Got 10 perch that were over 9" and a limit of real nice sunfish..all over 8 1/2 inches. Wish I had a camera that was working. Now im enetered in the tourney and cant take any pics! :( Any way if you are heading there tomorrow you should be all set.

Stay on Top! Fish On!

I was there today ice is good the launch was wet but holding shouldn't be any problem tomorrow. I was out 11 f.o.w. off of the wig ice was 5-6 inches mostly black ice where I was only fished one hole. I caught some nice perch some being the biggest I ever caught out of sandy. Only had 24 but all over 9 inches. I couldn't tell you how many through backs I had but it was constant fish. My partiner caught a solid 10 pound northern thing was huge.

Caught one Wednesday and my buddy lost one at the hole, mixed in with perch, hit a jig that I would never had expected at 1:20 pm which I never would have suspected and I tried fishing with a lure just before dark that is a Walleye lure and no hits!!! It was in 11 feet of water somewhere near the middle of the pond. Seems like just moving around, putting in your time you may happen into an Eye or three...

Half the pond has that overnight ice on it, there is still plenty of open water!  Maybe if this snow holds off it will get better but they are calling for 20-30mph winds again so who knows, rivers and tribs are fishing real good!!
