Maine Ice Conditions?
« on: Jan 09, 2013, 04:48 PM »
I know this is the wrong topic but I know this topic is viewed a lot. But anyway here is my question, I was wondering how many months Maine has safe fishing ice(at least 4 inches) and also how thick it is right now?

You looking at going on a road trip.  Maine depending on where in the state you are will get ice about the 1st of Dec in the north of Maine, and will have ice most years into late march beginning of April. The lake ice thickness varies with how much snow we've got.  In northern Maine ice is about 12" on some lakes in the southern part of the state a few inches at best. Souther and coastal areas are usually warmer and ice sometimes doesn't form till mid Dec to early Jan on larger lakes. Small ponds will usually have safe ice 3" by mid Dec, then ice out is usually by mid march.
