I know it used to be a law,but is it still?I couldn't find it in the pamplet they call a lawbook.I know you used to have to put your name and town of residence,on each fishing device"tip-ups".And one more question,I couldn't find the answer to.Do you have to label a portable iceshack, with your name and address??If you don't leave it on the lake.anybody know?thanks,LLS

Traps and Shack should be labeled ...but NOT a law!

No and No.

i labeled all of my traps because we fish a big group and a guy we USED to fish with would claim your trap as his. so i labeled mine with name and cell number. i also see this as a good thing because if you loose it on the ice and if one of the better fishermen out there finds it. they could get in contact with me to get it back. iv herd a story about a guy leaving his trap to go for a quick ride and ended up at a restraunt waiting for food and someone called him and told him he had a flag because he had his number written on the trap. ended up being like a 2lb brookie!!! but i always label mine and was told it should be done but not a must.

Especially If you are going to fish a tournament.

Traps don't need to be but the ice shack does.

Not if it is NOT permanent.

MDH,
Here is a cut/paste from the current law book;
ICE FISHING SHACK: A person who owns any shack or temporary structure used for
ice fishing:
• May not leave or allow the shack or structure to remain on the ice of any inland waters
after April 1st; and
• Shall have painted on the outside of the shack or structure in 2-inch letters, the owner’s
name and address when the shack or structure is on the ice of any inland waters.
Page 9.
I bought my new Shappell last year and 2nd time out had a slight disagreement with a warden. He was right if you read the law book.

I have fished with a clam for the last 6 years and asked several wardens this very question. Everytime I ask the answer is the same. NO you don't need to put You name on a portable shanty. If it makes you feel better to do it then by all means go ahead.
-
I don't want to put my name on it because it would wreck it. There is not even a space to insert anything. As it is I just keep a couple of printouts and post it in one of the windows.
I always thought the portables were like a free-bee from the rule. The warden said he'd only give me a warning since I had only bought it two days before I had used it. He even called me at home to tell me what page to read the law on. I thought that was nice of him...
See why the warden service gets such a bad rap, they all are not on the same page.
-
Does that mean you have to label your truck if you are fishing from that!!! ??? ;D
-
I'm a big boy and I fear the wardens so I have 2" letters on the outside of my coat, it says "Kick Me!" I'm not taking annnnnnnnyyyyyyyy chances!

You mean the sticker on my tailgate that says "Bodwells, Pleasant St. Brunswick" isn't enough?

Heck, when the wife comes with me I make her put the 2" letters "Free" on her back! I still go home with her......

Never ever would I put my name on the outside of a portable unless I was planning on leaving it there while I was gone. Which I would never ever do either. so no name for me ever.

Well I hope I don't have to read a thread about how unjust the rules are. Its in the lawbook, so good luck.
-
why not put your names on the traps, won't hurt em, and it only takes a couple minutes.

This is a link to the actual law, and technically it looks like you do need your temporary shelter labeled...although mine is not.
I have fished in NY in the past, and they require traps to be labeled. Maine has not had such a law, at least for the past 40 years.

I guess my link above doesn't work, so copy and paste it into your browser...

I only put my Name and Address in my Underware!! In case I Forget them on the Ice. :flex:

Where did reality disappear to? I thought I caught a glimpse of her, but she slipped my mind... :-\
