Damper or no damper
« on: Nov 09, 2009, 08:14 AM »
I am re-doing all the stove piping in my hardside. It is only a little 6x8 with a good stove. Is it that important to have a damper on the pipe? My last shack was bigger and did not have one, and heated well ?

Is it important ! NO
Would I use one ! Yes
Without one you have way too much heat going out the stack and you waste wood .

You will get more heat with less wood if you use a damper.

You can also control the temps inside better .  if your getting warm , close the damper way down and restrict the air the fire is getting .
Its better to be thought an idiot , than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.......

Hauling less wood and temp control for just a couple dollars would be worth it to me. Plus the ability too shut it down when you leave and not worry about your shack burning down is always a plus. I heat with wood and my insert only has an intake control. I wish I could put a second damper in but its got a flex pipe up through the chimney and it would be a pain to go through the tile and brick work and I wouldnt get a good seal with the ribs on the flex pipe. It costs me a bit more wood but it's better than paying the gas company.

Well just to walk a different path to the honey hole,,,

You don`t need a damper...

It seems easier to control the heat and save fuel (wood, pellets etc,) but you`ll learn to open it all the way real fast when it comes time to add more wood! Especially if you forget just one time! Cough cough cough (hack wheeze) cough....  :o
