when fishing a lake is it better to put a tip up on a bare spot with no snow on it, or is it better to put the tip up on a snowy part? mi was just curious if it really made a difference or not. I usually try to do a snowy spot that way I don't slip and bust my ass when running over to a flag that is up. lol. just kind of curious to see what everyone does. thanks!!

I’ve honestly never really given it any thought. If a spot looks good I’ll set one up regardless of snow. A good pair of cleats stops slips and falls, ya know? Lol. Now, if I could only remember to bring my cleats we would be in business.
In this case “better” would be subjective to the angler. I suppose if the ice was very clear and the water was shallow that some snow on top could provide shade for cover kind of like a dark house would. In that case, snow may provide better results than if there was a bunch of sun shining through the ice. It would be a neat experiment to try and see if it made a difference to the fish.

If on patch of snow ...I will drill a hole on the edge of the snow and set up a tip up ,tip down or jig that hole ..my theory is that fish will use the snow packs shadow to ambush prey.

I go in the snow . Less slippery !!

We usually look for structure then drop tip-ups on top of it.

thanks for the input. I would try some of each but in Colorado you are only allowed 2 rods and a tip up counts as one of your rods. I usually do 1 tip up and then use my other rod for trout.

Thats an interesting question! My tipdowns require some snow to pack around the base, so those usually go in the snow....but now Im going to have to experiment and keep track.

In the snow if possible.

- won't bust your butt falling
- I once had a tip up go sailing across the bare ice. Fish tripped the flag. Wind caught the flag and pushed the tip up out of the hole and blew it across the ice until it spooled all the line off.

If it’s cold and blowing outside, on the snow, it will help insulate your hole. Also x2 on the not falling on your ass

One of the things Fish love his cover. I have always thought that snow patches on the ice might provide that sense of security for them. When I am fishing shallow Lakes with patches of snow, I definitely try to drill my holes in the snow and use hole covers as well. Not sure if that makes a difference, but like others have said there are other advantages to the snow.

this year in Colorado all the lakes have no snow on them yet so it is just nice slick ice. we have iced a few pike already to start the season so far. once we get some snow patches I will start trying those also

We just had 3 straight days of 40/50 degree weather. Yesterday it was mid 50's and raining. Today it was 15, windchill of 3. Won't have to worry about snow patches for a while!! :D
