Ice Cleats.... GET'em... WEAR'em!
« on: Jan 03, 2016, 06:02 AM »
Story: A senior ice fisherman & long time ICE fishing buddy didnt put on his ice cleats last season after a pretty good snowstorm in NE Ohio. He purposely left them in his vehicle and decided NOT to wear them.  He thought trekking across the ice would NOT be slippery because of the snow pack.

WRONG: He fell and broke his wrist ending his ice fishing season and spending the most of the following year recovering.

Buy'em or Make'em... But WEAR'em

Here's a few pics of my home made cleats for my Mickey Mouse Boots:

What about with thinner ice (3" or so)? Will cleats dig into the ice too much and make falling through more a possibility?

I agree no. Depending how much you weigh better chances of breaking the ice from slipping and crashing through it.  :)

I'm lucky.
My company hands out spikeys like candy. Big safety issue after a couple of lost time accidents. They tell us to take them home for personal use, no questions.
Everyone in the house has them. Spares in the car, the truck, the jetsled.
Always wear them when I'm out on the ponds. Makes running for flags so much quicker.

Yup Katoola micro spikes are worth every penny they cost. I think the new ones are even better with some refinements.
