Title: Buddy Heater Cooking Experts
Post by: puddy on Dec 29, 2014, 05:49 PM
What are your go to recipes for reheating leftovers on your heater. I like the small loaf pan ideas for a cooking container. I was thinking of B&G and I will try it my next time out. I also like the baked ziti and mac and cheese ideas as well. Im just wondering what other caserole type dishes do you like to bring on the ice.

My weakness is my stomach!!!

Maybe this is a dumb question, but what's B&G?

In certain circles you would be cast from the group for asking such questions.

Nothing beats hot chili and hotdogs! It's been known to bring in hungry ice holes from all over the lake! :o

I like to use the Chinese food style containers from the dollar store for re-heating.  Lasagna, spaghetti, and sauerkraut with bratwurst are 3 favourites of mine.

That's what I was eating when I asked! Never even thought to bring it on the ice with me, that's going to have to happen this year.

I figure it would work in those small aluminium foil loaf pans. My wife also made a bunch of twice baked potatoes and froze them. I think those would work too, maybe take a bit longer because of how dense potatoes are.

I have a thick pie tin and I set it on my little buddy and pour almonds in it. Then I just snack on them while I'm fishing. Good to know others use their buddies to cook on. I also heat up my jerky on it. Anything I snack on I warm up first to keep the ole core temp up.

I would be really afraid of getting gravy or chili sauce on my ceramic heating element.  I think I will stick to the MSR stove and Weber Smokey Joe.

I like to get shaved ham or roast beef from the local deli. I put it in a loaf tin with some butter and set it on my buddy heater. Some buns and a cheese slice or two, and you have a nice hot sandwich to eat on the ice. Simple but good.

most days i like to bring any chinese or japanese noodles soup with hard boiled eggs. i used the loaf pan foil to heat the water. pour it and its ready in less than 5mins. plus the soup really warms your body up.

I ahvnt gotten into cooking on my buddy yet, but my plan this season. But I do frequently get a package of my favorite hot dogs, drop thawed hot dogs in my thermos fill with boiling water, and pack it in my gear. By lunch time you have cooked hot dogs. Then I place a bun on the heater buddy for 20 seconds a side. Fish out a dog with a fork and slap it on the bun. cheap, fast and easy

That's genius with the hot dog, I never thought of that. May have to give that a try, heck you could heat up some chili on the buddy heater and have chili dogs.

this is definitely a "life hack"
soo easy! fool proof. as long as you don't get "plumping" hot dogs...
also I suggest having a thermos dedicated to hot dogs, or at least food. hot dog stank, and coffee stank are 2 stanks that don't stop stankin. I couldn't imagine both stanks combined

what is holding the grate on the heater? just the weight of the food?

I modified some electrical conduit clamps and attached them to the top.  The grate tucks under the clamps and rests on top of the buddy heater cage.  Stores away perfectly in the storage bag for the heater.

Yes.  I drilled a pilot hole and used a course threaded screw just long enough to get into the metal body of the heater.

During hunting season, I set aside 5-10 pounds of stew meat depending on what I shoot. I make a bunch of stew and freeze it in individual freezer bags. I take out a bag the day before I'm going out then heat it up in the shanty. Not much better than that on a cold day.   ;D

I've read the sticky at the top of the page, that pertains to modifying the buddy heater to heat food on. This thread is intended to go more in depth as to what people are cooking on their modified heaters.

This week was a good week. My wife made a large batch of the mac and cheese that is on the side of the valveeta box, she also made a large batch of chili. So I took a spoonful of mac and cheese and put that in the center of the loaf pan then topped it off with chili. It was an odd combination but I liked it.

Its a Ham and Cheese variant that uses Hawaiian rolls and they get brushed with a concoction of butter, worchestershire sauce, and some other stuff. There's recipes if you google it.

I really like to order a dominoes pizza the day before going fishing, eat half and toss the other half in the fridge. put it in the truck in the morning and it will be nice and cold when you get to the lake. toss one piece at a time on the buddy cooking grate with the buddy on medium, rotating the piece quite frequently. continue until top of pizza is warm. usually takes about 5 minutes. the crust becomes very crispy and delicious.

Little smokies with some bbq sauce in the loaf pan, I bought a camping fork at Walmart that I keep in the flip over.  You can put these on early and let them cook / heat up until you are hungry.

Finally getting some ice forming around us, got a pile of tins from the dollar store and plugged in the spare fridge. Any other gourmet buddy heater recipes I should try out?
My personal favorite is Hawaiin sweet roll breakfast sandwiches.
Take a roll of sausage make it 1/2" thick in a pan, cook off (I perfer chorizo). In another pan cook eggs with peppers, salt and pepper to flavor. Cut sweet rolls in half, put bottoms in a tin, then the sausage, the cooked eggs, I add colby jack cheese, top buns, then glaze with a 50/50 mix of butter and syrup. I stab holes in the lids when cooking to cook glaze on.

HIGH JACK ALERT
I went to the local dollar store and bought a wire frame used for roasting turkeys standing up in the oil cooker. It cost a dollar. I slid the one part into the framework after bending it 90 degrees. I slid it through the round wire grating on the top of the Mr. Heater and now have a great one  place 5"grill to cook on.

Hot ham and potato soup with celery and onion and spice it up.

Bone appetitto

Hot pockets today - super easy just use aluminum foil to heat up

I also use the loaf pans - brought out leftovers - potatoe and burger mixture - my son asked where was the hot sauce I just laughed.

I carry paper plate and plastic forks also, they all come back with us. It is almost a challenge what to bring. It makes it part of the trip

Frankly I am agahst ! I was prepared to see every other recipe a fried fish variant ! I am a firm believer in eating fresh fish on the ice. I bring my frying pan, oil, a big ziplock with my breading mixture, a garbage bag for the guts and my filet knife. I make a pot of coffee from my percolator and  have that always available. Run and gun ? Some days. Other days I am content to sit and drink coffee and try to catch a couple eaters and listen to the vikings kick butt.

I've done premade chicken quesadillas wrapped in alum foil that just need warmed up. Dip in some salsa and good to go. Sour cream if want.
