How to switch out jigs/lures quickly?
« on: Feb 28, 2014, 08:31 AM »
I was just curious how you guys switch out your jigs/lures?  Do you just re-tie every time you want to switch?  Or just have a lot of poles all pre-rigged?  Or do you have rigs set up with leaders already attached and just use a swivel setup of some sort?   I am just started to get into jig fishing (normally all tip-ups) and don't have a lot of jig poles and also get bothered with re-tieing every time I mark fish but they are interested in what i have on.

Thanks!

Depends on what is being targeted for me. If I am fishing pan fish I would have no problem using an aid like the Quick Clips. Anything bigger and I will retie .

When using a knot like the Palomar for instance, retying is so simple I personally wouldn't think of using a clip of any kind.

So you just have the quick clip hooked on the end of all of your leaders and have a small swivel on your pole's line to connect to?

Thanks!

Palomar knots are really quick to tie after you use them for awhile. I never liked quick clips or swivels. I also have 3-5 rods with me depending on what im targeting.

Hi,  I try not to tie lines while on the ice.
I just switch rod's, just carry a bucket full of rod's if you can afford them.
I have 5 or 6 rod's to go, some are fancy and some not.
The only reason why I do it, I have the shakes bad.
My hands shake so bad I do not have jig the the rod.
I normally set my rod's between 2-3 AM; seems I am the most stable,
That is when I am the least shakey.
I am not nervous;  just shakey

I take  a minimum of 7 rods rigged with different lures, jigs, plastics, etc. I sometime use the quick clips on a heavier deep water rod. As good a knot as the Palomar is; I often use loop knots as it gives the lure a little more room for action and helps with spinning compared to a tight knot.

I have 3 rods. All 3 have quick clips on them.

I use the tiny horseshoe clips made for fly fishing. They work great for anything but a giant laker or pike.

I've used quick clips for years.  Caught a lot of nice crappie on them and northerns even up to 12 lbs (by accident).  When targeting bigger fish and using larger baits I usually tie instead.

I have different rods with different lines (Mono, Braid, Floro), but also use the No Knots/Fas Snaps:

The problem with clips like these is you cant get a jig to hang the way you want. Take a Ratso its supposed to hang horizontal and it wont with that clip

I have some of the fas snaps which come in 3 sizes, teeney, tiny & small.  When I use them I use the smallest on 2-4 lb line for panfish.  On the other hand I'll carry out 4-5 pre rigged poles in a bucket.  As mentioned on a horizontal small jig it won't hang that way with waxworm or spike and doesn't give it the same action when jigged so I guess I'm saying the prerigged poles are my first choice with the tied on jigs.  I do make sure to check the tied jigs to see if the knot is tight and straight with the world.  Can't see why it would matter on a vertical jig.  Everyone has their own method and success .

I re tie but also take 3-4 rods so you can try multiple colors or jigs and chances are ones going to be what they're after.

I've used the snaps on small spoons but don't like them on small jigs and micro plastics. I just go with 6-10 pre tied rods with a different look on them. My old eyes have a hard time tying jigs on the ice.

RDHAMMAH - I have trouble as well but I use my forceps to get them on/off. Just grab them at the bottom (big part of the loop). Also lock the forceps onto them so you don't have to grab them twice. Took a while but once I got the hang of it it's second nature.

Stay on top!

I have 6 rods all rigged up with different jigs and an assortment of favorite colors. I used to use the Fas Snaps but found them difficult to get the jigs on and off especially with cold hands. The this year, one of my last rods to have one on, had a Buckshot Rattlespoon on it. I was jiggling it to make it rattle when I had a hit. I set the hook and it felt really solid for a second or two, the nothing. All I got back was the clip. I nipped off the clip and vowed, "Never again".
I tie a uniknot, not because it's the best, but because I can tie it with cold hands in the dark.
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the ice looking like an idiot.

I have fas snaps on my big spooning, jigging rap and lipless bait rod. My crappie and bluegill setups are direct tied and I alternate between them.
