Son's First Fish
« on: Jan 01, 2015, 10:08 PM »
Went to Evergreen a week ago to try and get my son his first official fish. I set the hook and held the pole, he reeled it in himself. He's had lots of prep; I have him practicing with a small stuffed animal tied to an old crappy ice combo. His casting needs some work, but he can reel like a champ. It may be a stocker, but it's not bad for a 2.5 year old...

That is a great thing to share with your son! I started taking my son at two and a half he is four now and one heck of a fisherman. I don't think he would let me go without taking him. He loves fishing. It is important to train our future sportsmen in the ways and traditions that we want them to carry on.

Get a smaller auger Nhurley. I remember the first time I took my boy I thought it would be ok for him to clean the holes with the scoop while I was getting other things set up. Turned around and he was up to his elbow in the hole. He slipped and fell towards the hole and sent my new scoop to the bottom. A friend drilled those holes for me I didn't have an auger yet. The next month was my b day and my wife said I could get any auger that I wanted. I decided I wanted the eskimo 51Z but sportsmans only had it in a ten inch and I knew my boy could fit down a ten inch hole, and the sales guy didn't want to trade the auger with an eight incher so I got the 43 cc with the 8 inch and couldn't be happier. Unfortunately I don't have the kind of problems that the fish I catch won't fit up through an eight inch hole. Good luck and be safe.

Thanks for sharing.  I have lots of great memories (reinforced by similar pics) of my grandsons when they started off.  Cherish these times.
