Not my BIL, one of my nieces boy friend. She begged me to. I was kind enough to switch the crank to the other side of the reel. When we were leaving I had to turn around and pickup some trash he left on the bank. I had hoped he would pick it up. He didn’t! Also the last time I took him fishing! Happily she kicked him to the curb about a month later..

Related, clueless.... Not 3 minutes ago as I opened my new feed for the day, a pop up appeared for some
beach in Florida.  It showed kids playing in the sand and beside them was a spinning rod/reel laying in
the sand...

fish on,

I grew up on spinning reals, my dad grew up on bait casters. The first time I handed him one of my rods to try that's what he did. he figured it out in relatively short order, handed it back to me & went back to his bait caster.

I grew up with right handed conventional reels (16-130) on top. When I bought my first 6061 RH inline and it’s on the bottom it still feels unnatural. I guess it’s all you are used to…

I'm left handed.  Some of the... err... "Gentlemen" with whom I fish are prone to imbibe to the point of reaching that redneck Nirvana know as, "too drunk to fish"...

I have often landed fish with the reel on top... cranking backwards...

When the term googan got traction in the 70's, it referred to lowlife fishermen. Seeing a person reel upside down was proof positive of googan activity. Now kids refer to their best buddies as googans as a term of friendship.  :-\ Question is, how many guys gonna fess up that they reel upside down in the safety of their shanty? ;D

Not quite. But I do switch the handles to the right side of my spinning reels...and I'm right handed. Dunno...just feels more comfortable to me. Better control.  ???

I use right or left hand retrieve.if my rod is setting on my left my reel handle is on the right.if its on my right the  handle is on the left.this is when i use 2 holes.if i jig 2 rods river walleye fishing its same way.most my baitcasters are right hand retrieve,50/50 spinning reels and all my Centerpin reels are left hand.i also pitched with both hands and can use either ball glove.

There ya go Doc.....invent a reel with no crank handle, just a centrally located push button. Hit button, reel winds in.Two models: battery operated (lithium), or spring loaded, just turn until spring is tight, like the crank up starters on those 60's Toro mowers for us old pharts. The Crank-o-matic. $19.95. But wait! Order now, and...  :woot:
I'll split the profits 50/50 with ya.

I think those were called the Abu Garcia automatic fly reels. I have one, still loaded with 8 wt fly line and a poorly tied leader and tippet. It's spring loaded, like a tape measure, and to take up line all you do is push the center button.

Yup, my Dad was a Toro dealer. We always had the latest and greatest. Had one of those traded in. That thing was a killer, by the way. Use a Flymo and watch yer toes go.  :pinch:

Back to the reels.....dang it!!! Someone always beats me to it!   :%$#!:  ;D

Worked on a golf course during high school and college. We used a flymo on tall, steep banks behind a couple of greens, just sweep it back and forth while standing uphill of it. Some of the banks are 30' high. One time, my friend had to let it go, it started down the hill fast then had just enough lift to lift off a little like a sheet of cardboard in the wind. It did a half flip, landing on it back still running for 30 seconds or so. He was glad he didn't fall down the hill into it.   :pinch:

LOL>..........I have a cousin that has been trout fishing since he could walk.   He picked up a spinning reel when he was a kid and his father never corrected him, because he was doing better than most other kids his age.   He's now 56 years old.  From surf caster to penn 420.  I fish with him probably 3-4 times a year.   Every time I see it; I have to laugh.  He catches fish. ;D
The only time I learn something is when I'm not talking.

My buddy who is an avid fisher, and has been his whole life, uses a spinning rod like that. Not only that, he usually has something broken or wrong with the rod he’s using, including not having enough line to cast. But all he does is wacky rig a senko and tosses it out there, then just sets the rod down (drops is actually) next to him on the floor of the boat and waits for a bite, like he’s fishing with live bait. Somehow, he always catches more bass than me when I’m actively fishing or even doing the exact same thing.
