Lights for Jack Traps
« on: Jan 02, 2013, 06:26 PM »
Hello all, me and the wife were thinking of buying some jack traps but was wondering since we do a lot if night fishing is there a way to use a light on them like the frabill flashing one?

Not sure,  the Jack's use a piece of thin spring steel with a felt flag and split ring at the top.  The frabil I think uses
a spring with a rod in it with the flag.  If you attach anything to the Jack's spring steel it may not go up as they really aren't that strong.  If your looking for height of trap then the heritage lakers have a stronger spring with a rod that you could prob attach a light to.

I use the heritage traps with the frabil lights that attach onto the spring rod.  I found that the spring steel style ones don't work very well because of the weight of the light is too much for them but they work great on the heritage and you can see them a long way off

I use the old school wood tipups with the Frabill Arctic Siren Alarm.
This style pulls a pin out of the unit to set off the alarm or lights.
The trick is to mount on the main wood beam just under the flag release do not mount to the legs.
The unit will come with the screws.
The Frabill has a small string with a clip that you hook to your flag.
The wire flag is more than strong enough to pull the pin. You may need to experiment with placement thou.

As the mount is off the ground you can see the lights for miles.
If your in a shanty then you can turn the alarm on and trust me you will hear it.
Sounds like a car alarm going off.
When I get home I'll set a trap up and try to post a pic.

I use the artic fire light's on my Jacks. As long as you keep the light low on the flag there's no problem.

As far as attaching them to the spring steel you can tape them or get creative with alligator clips and peices of coat hanger or heavy wire.

Maybe you could put a small glowstick on it or something. The flags are not heavy wire flags.
