is it ok to use steel or heavy mono on burbot? or are they shy and i need to go light?

Well what i know from catching them they have no teeth but can fight. Go with the mono or fluorocarbon.

From my limited experience, they seem to be slow swallowers, but they can slam a lure pretty hard.  So no special leaders needed for me.

Mono is fine, no special leaders needed. I would never use coarse tackle for anything in the winter unless it is necessary. I will use steel or titanium for pike, but I draw the line there. 15 lb fluro is a good choice if you are getting bite offs from stray pike.

4lb mono and a good drag is what you need for pout.
