Lil buddy heater pilot light
« on: Dec 02, 2020, 09:42 PM »
I'm sure this topic has been brought up before, but I'd like to keep my heater
pilot light from blowing out when it's windy.
Gotta be a hack somewhere.
Thx

My hack was to switch to an old sunflower style heater,  no problems since.  Too many days left cold by a buddy heater that wouldn't stay lit

My little buddy works fine when I can get it lit. The tilt shut off will stick and it takes a few raps on the side loosens it up. I don't recall where I read that tip but it works. I always use mine in my shelter so I usually don't have it go out in the wind, is a heater like this even effective in the wind?

I did a video on how I made a wind guard for my Portable Buddy Heater, it has been working pretty well for me. Also has how I made my Heating Rack. Hoping this could help or inspire anybody with their own spin on these mods.

Thanks Bart for the video, I'll make one later today.
I haven't had any trouble with pilot light in my shanty, however I want to use it in my boat
to warm my hands, and it will only run for short periods of time.
Under my console, so this will be perfect.
Thanks again.

I've done 3 buddy thermocouple adjustments and all are rock steady in the wind now. Trick is to keep that thermocouple hot enough that the gas valve stays open if the pilot goes out briefly.

Just know you are defeating the low 02 shut off safety feature it has. The sensor is left further away so if the 02 level lowers, the flame becomes weaker and shuts off the gas. Yes, it will go out if there is no 02 left for the pilot, but by then it has used up the 02 you needed.

I did this mod long ago before reading about it today. Just make certain you always have good fresh air exchange. Not only for 02, but to remove c02.

I made a 3 sided one like that out of a beer can and riveted it in place. It works great.
